Outside of SNL, George Wendt reprised his role of Swerski in the opening promo of Super Bowl XL on ABC.

This was the first Super Bowl to be televised in the United States by ABC, joining the annual broadcasting rotation of the game with CBS and NBC.

As a result of the 1982 television contract signed by the NFL with the three networks, this game was the first Super Bowl to be televised in the United States by ABC, as they earned their first turn at the Super Bowl, with a new alternation process started for the 1983 game.

This would be the only ABC Super Bowl for Gifford as play-by-play announcer, the final game for Don Meredith and the second ( and last ) time a commentator for the Super Bowl ( Theismann ) was an active player ( Jack Kemp in Super Bowl II was the only other active player to provide commentary ).

This would be the first Super Bowl broadcast on ABC to have the broadcast team of Michaels, Gifford, and Dierdorf in the booth ( as the 1987 season was the first year the trio was together, with Dierdorf moving to ABC from CBS ; Gifford was the only holdover from ABC's Super Bowl XIX telecast ).

The halftime show was later shown on tape delay after the game ( at around 10: 40 EST and 9: 40 CST ), although most ABC affiliates ran the first episode of Davis Rules following the Super Bowl, and may have televised the remaining parts  of the halftime show later.

CBS broadcast Super Bowl II, then the league rotated the broadcast between CBS and NBC until 1985 when ABC entered the rotation when they broadcast Super Bowl XIX.

This would be the final Super Bowl hosted by Musburger, as all subsequent Super Bowls on ABC were hosted by ESPN's Chris Berman following the Disney purchase of ABC ( which included ESPN ), and the subsequent integration of ESPN and ABC Sports ( now ESPN on ABC ).

This would also be the last Super Bowl aired on ABC until the 1999 season ( when Al Michaels called the game with Boomer Esiason ).

On the Tuesday prior to the Super Bowl, the ABC sitcom Full House aired an episode called " Super Bowl Fun Day " involving two main characters actually at the game.

According to the 2006 Preview issue of Soap Opera Digest, it was briefly discussed that all ABC shows might do telenovela arcs, but this was rejected.

ABC invested heavily in shows with wide appeal, especially situation comedies such as Happy Days, Barney Miller, Three's Company, Taxi and Soap.

Soap is an American sitcom that originally ran on ABC from 1977 into 1981.

In early March 1977, ABC screened the first two episodes of Soap for the executives of its 195 affiliate stations, many of whom were instantly appalled by the show's emphasis on sex and infidelity.

When Soap premiered on September 13, 1977, 18 out of 195 ABC affiliates had refused to air the program with others choosing to broadcast it after 11PM.

Although Susan Harris had planned for five seasons of Soap, the program was canceled by ABC after its fourth season.

However, according to the Museum of Broadcast Communications, Soap " ended under suspicion that resistance from ad agencies may have caused ABC to cancel at that point " because its still controversial content was negatively affecting its relationship with sponsors.

In addition to The Odd Couple, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Happy Days, other live sitcoms that were sweetened by Douglass were The Paul Lynde Show ( ABC, 1972 – 73 ), The Bob Newhart Show ( CBS, 1972 – 78 ), Maude ( CBS, 1972 – 78 ), Rhoda ( CBS, 1974 – 78 ), Laverne and Shirley ( ABC, 1976 – 83 ), Alice ( CBS, 1976 – 85 ), Soap ( ABC, 1977 – 81 ), Taxi ( ABC, 1978 – 82 ; NBC, 1982 – 83 ), Seinfeld ( NBC 1990-1998 ), Friends ( NBC 1994-2004 ), Cheers ( NBC, 1982 – 93 ) and its spinoff Frasier ( NBC, 1993 – 2004 ).

Manhattan-based Skillgames, with endorsements by Disney-owned properties such as ESPN and ABC, was to develop skill-based games such as " Hole-In-One Golf ," " Soap Opera Trivia " and others implemented as Java applets on their site.

Helmond gained prominence as Jessica Tate, the ditzy matriarch in Soap ( 1977 – 81 ) on ABC.

In 2004, Treadway and Rinna hosted a TV special, that pre-empted The View for one day during the 2004 Summer Olympics, called SOAPnet Reveals ABC Soap Secrets.

In 1985, Carrie Kei Heim played the title role in the 2-part ABC Weekend Special, entitled Pippi Longstocking.

The company held the London weekend franchise from 1955 until 1968, when London Weekend Television took over, and from 1956 until 1982 in the Midlands region, initially weekdays only alongside ABC, before becoming full-time from 1968.

Formed as a joint company, it merged the television interests of British Electric Traction ( trading as Associated Rediffusion ) owning 49 %, and Associated British Picture Corporation ( trading as ABC Weekend Television ) owning 51 %.

Granada Television and ABC Weekend Television had laid a claim to providing service via Caldbeck whilst Scottish Television expressed a strong interest in Selkirk.

The start time for the Saturday and Sunday editions of GMA vary between ABC affiliates, though the standard timeslot for the program is the same as its weekday editions at 7 a. m. in all time zones, and most ABC affiliates air the Saturday edition of GMA immediately before the Litton Weekend Adventure block and the Sunday edition before This Week.
