On May 25, 1955, twenty-seven United States Air Force personnel, known as the Abbot 27, perished in an airplane crash near Sterling City.

On June 27, 2001, the Canadian government unveiled a monument in Jacques-Cartier Park, in Hull, Quebec, honouring Richard, and he was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame.
