The exact region referred to as " Blessed Land " in the Qur ' an verse has been interpreted differently by various scholars: Abdullah Yusuf Ali likens it to a wide land range including, Syria, Palestine and the cities of Tyre and Sidon ; Az-Zujaj describes it as, " Damascus, Palestine, and a bit of Jordan "; Qatada claims it to be, " the Levant "; Muadh ibn Jabal as, " the area between al-Arish and the Euphrates "; and Ibn Abbas as, " the land of Jericho ".

Soon thereafter in 1934, Abdullah Yusuf Ali published his translation, featuring copious explanatory annotation-over 6000 notes, generally being around 95 % of the text on a given page, to supplement the main text of the translation.

He was reportedly under Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, an important figure in the early history of al-Qaeda.

" When the people – overjoyed at the news of new young boys in the village – came to snatch them away from Lot, he tried to convince them to refrain from practising their lusts on the visitors, and offered his own daughters to them ( to marry, according to the translation of Abdullah Yusuf Ali ) in return for the boys ' free release, but they were unrelenting and replied " we have no need of your daughters: indeed you know quite well what we want!

Hamad bin Abdullah's death in 1948, however, led to a succession crisis in which the main candidates were Abdullah bin Jassim's eldest son, Ali bin Abdullah Al Thani, and Hamad bin Abdullah's teenage son, Khalifa ibn Hamad Al Thani.

Aged and anxious, Abdullah bin Jassim turned to the British, promised to abdicate, and agreed, among other things, to an official British presence in Qatar in exchange for recognition and support for Ali bin Abdullah as ruler in 1949.

Ali bin Abdullah was at first reluctant to share power, which had centered in his household, with an infant bureaucracy run and staffed mainly by outsiders.

This and other demonstrations led Ali bin Abdullah to invest the police with his personal authority and support, a significant reversal of his previous reliance on his retainers and beduin fighters.

When revenues declined in the late 1950s, however, Ali bin Abdullah could not handle the family pressures this engendered.

That Shaykh Ali bin Abdullah spent extravagantly, owned a villa in Switzerland, and hunted in Pakistan fueled discontent, especially among those who were excluded from the regime's largesse ( non-Al Thani Qataris ) and those who were not excluded but thought they deserved more ( other branches of the Al Thani ).

Succumbing to family pressures and poor health, Ali bin Abdullah abdicated in 1960.

In November 1989, the leaders of the YAR ( Ali Abdullah Saleh ) and the PDRY ( Ali Salim al-Baidh ) agreed on a draft unity constitution originally drawn up in 1981.

On October 1, 1994, Parliament elected President Ali Abdullah Saleh to a 5-year term.

The country held its first direct presidential elections in September 1999, electing President Ali Abdullah Saleh to a 5-year term in what were generally considered credible elections.

The protestors ' demands then escalated to calls for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to resign.

Interestingly the commentary in the translation of Abdullah Y. Ali-which is the most widespread English translation of the Qur ' an-indicate that this group in fact were the Arabs and not Jews: " The Qibla of Jerusalem might itself have seemed strange to the Arabs, and the change from it to the Ka ' ba might have seemed strange after they had become used to the other.

The first fully attested complete translation of the Qur ' an was completed in 884 in Alwar ( currently known as Sindh, Pakistan ) by the orders of Abdullah bin Umar bin Abdul Aziz on the request of the Hindu Raja Mehruk.

Alī's cousin and a renowned Islamic jurist, Abdullah ibn Abbas, pointed out the grave theological errors made by the Kharijites in quoting the Qur ' an, and managed to persuade a number of Kharijites to return to Alī based on their misinterpretations.

The first complete translation of the Qur ' an was completed in 884 CE in Alwar ( Sindh by the orders of Abdullah bin Umar bin Abdul Aziz on the request of the Hindu Raja Mehruk.

He was encouraged by his father to memorize the Qur ' an, and was also tutored by scholars such as Ibn Munira of Kafartab and Abu Abdullah al-Tulaytuli of Toledo.
