A United Kingdom government committee, known as the " Explosives Committee ", chaired by Sir Frederick Abel, monitored foreign developments in explosives and obtained samples of Poudre B and Ballistite.

Richard was baptised in the private chapel of Windsor Castle on 20 October 1944 by Lord Lang of Lambeth and his godparents were the Queen ( his paternal aunt and wife of George VI ), Princess Marie Louise ( his cousin ), the Countess of Athlone ( his cousin, for whom her daughter, the Lady May Abel Smith stood proxy ), the Duke of Buccleuch ( his maternal uncle ), the Marquess of Cambridge ( his cousin ), the Lady Sybil Phipps ( his maternal aunt ), and General the Hon Sir Harold Alexander ( for whom his wife, the Lady Margaret Alexander, stood proxy ).

Lady May married Henry Abel Smith ( later Sir Henry ) on 24 October 1931.

Colonel Sir Henry Abel Smith KCMG KCVO DSO ( 8 March 1900 – 24 January 1993 ) was a British Army officer and a Governor of Queensland.

His successor, Sir Henry Abel Smith was British.

As part of the preparations for the Crimean War ( 1854 – 56 ), Frederick Abel ( later Sir Frederick Abel ) was appointed the first War Department Chemist with the aim of investigating the new chemical explosives which were then being developed.

He was chairman of the provisional committee appointed by Edward Prince of Wales to formulate a scheme for its organization, and he took an active part in the preparation of its royal charter and constitution in conjunction with Lord Thring, Lord James, Sir Frederick Abel and John Hollams.

The generic name commemorates Clarke Abel, a keen naturalist who accompanied Lord Amherst's unsuccessful embassy to China in 1816 as surgeon, under the sponsorship of Sir Joseph Banks.

Lord Carrington, Sir Ian Gilmour, Robert Mugabe, Joshua Nkomo, Bishop Abel Muzorewa and Dr. S C Mundawarara signed the report.

Soon after his father's death in 1710, he made his first appearance on the stage at Abel in Sir Robert Howard's The Committee at the Smock Alley Theatre.

After one of the Austrian factories blew up in 1862, Thomas Prentice & Company began manufacturing guncotton in Stowmarket in 1863 ; and British War Office chemist Sir Frederick Abel began thorough research at Waltham Abbey Royal Gunpowder Mills leading to a manufacturing process that eliminated the impurities in nitrocellulose making it safer to produce and a stable product safer to handle.

In 1889 Sir Frederick Abel, James Dewar and Dr W Kellner patented ( Nos 5614 and 11, 664 in the names of Abel and Dewar ) a new formulation that was manufactured at the Royal Gunpowder Factory at Waltham Abbey.

Robert Smith was the grandson of John Smith, brother of Sir George Smith, 1st Baronet ( see Bromley baronets ) and Abel Smith, ancestor of the Barons Carrington and the Barons Bicester.

His daughter Marcia married Colonel Richard Abel Smith, the son of Sir Henry Abel Smith, a Governor of Queensland.

Meanwhile, a government committee in Great Britain, called the " Explosives Committee " and chaired by Sir Frederick Abel monitored foreign developments in explosives.

Abel and Sir James Dewar, who was also on the committee, jointly patented a modified form of ballistite in 1889.

He worked with Sir Frederick Abel on improving the properties of black powder, making it burn more slowly to produce more gas and a more consistent pressure, with the result that he was able to increase muzzle velocities from 1600 to 2100 feet per second, while the energy developed increased by about 75 %.

In the 17th century Dutch explorers such as Abel Tasman explored the coasts of Australia, while in the 18th century it was British explorer James Cook who mapped much of Polynesia.

On 1 July 1832, Jardine, Matheson and Company, a partnership, between William Jardine, James Matheson as senior partners, and Hollingworth Magniac, Alexander Matheson, Jardine's nephew Andrew Johnstone, Matheson's nephew Hugh Matheson, John Abel Smith, and Henry Wright, as the first partners, was formed in China, taking the Chinese name ' Ewo ' ( 怡和 ) pronounced " Yee-Wo " and meaning ' Happy Harmony '.

Jardine's strength and character were brought to light with descriptions from both John Abel Smith and James Matheson.

Some of his most notable starring roles were in Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, Ridley Scott's The Duellists and Thelma & Louise, Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, Jane Campion's The Piano, Abel Ferrara's Bad Lieutenant, and James Mangold's Cop Land.

Along his 40 year long career, Keitel has established a solid collaboration with some directors such as: Martin Scorsese ( 5 ), Paul Auster ( 3 ), Quentin Tarantino ( 3 ), James Toback ( 3 ), Jane Campion ( 2 ), Abel Ferrara ( 2 ), Brad Mirman ( 2 ), Manuel Pradal ( 2 ), Alan Rudolph ( 2 ), Ridley Scott ( 2 ), Jon Turteltaub ( 2 ), and Wayne Wang ( 2 ).

This traditional depiction has continued for centuries in some form, such as James Tissot's 19th century Cain leads Abel to Death.

In the 19th century some Australian Catholics, living under a Protestant ascendancy, claimed that Queirós had in fact discovered Australia, in advance of the Protestants Willem Janszoon, Abel Tasman and James Cook.

Among the awards he has received are the Bôcher Memorial Prize ( 1969 ) and the Steele Prize for Lifetime Achievement ( 2000 ), both from the American Mathematical Society, the Eugene Wigner Medal ( 1988 ), the National Medal of Science ( 1983 ), the Abel Prize ( 2004, shared with Michael Atiyah ), and the James Rhyne Killian Faculty Achievement Award from MIT ( 2005 ).

Later on, in 1891, James Dewar and Frederick Augustus Abel also managed to transform gelatinized guncotton into a safe mixture, called cordite because it could be extruded into long thin cords before being dried.

Notable teachers at Woolwich included Frederick Augustus Abel, Peter Barlow, Samuel Hunter Christie, Adair Crawford, George Greenhill, Percy MacMahon, Paul Sandby and James Joseph Sylvester.

He was mostly responsible for bringing Guncotton into safe use and for winning a patent dispute brought by Alfred Nobel against the British Government over the patent rights to Cordite which Abel had jointly developed with Professor James Dewar.

On August 6, 2010, Poehler gave birth to son Abel James Arnett.

It was named Cabo Pieter Boreels by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman in 1642, but renamed Cape Egmont by British explorer James Cook in 1769.

The stimulus for this was David Scott Mitchell ’ s offer of his immense and, at the time, unrivalled collection of Australiana, including the original journals of Abel Tasman, James Cook and Matthew Flinders, to the people of New South Wales.

Discovered by Abel Tasman, it was named by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1770-it was the last land seen by his crew as they departed on the ship's homeward voyage.

The Hillfield leasehold, as well as the adjoining Belsize House leasehold ( around in total ) were bought by James Abel.

Alfred Bernhard Nobel sued Abel and Dewar over an alleged patent infringement.

After unsuccessful negotiations, in 1893 Nobel sued Abel and Dewar over patent infringement and lost the case.
