Robert Louis Stevenson, Fanny Vandegrift Stevenson and her son Lloyd Osbourne spent 2 months on Abemama in 1889.

The early years of the nineteenth century saw Lawrence's portrait practice continue to flourish: amongst his sitters were major political figures such as Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville and William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, whose wife Lady Caroline Lamb was also painted by Lawrence.

There is also a street in Edinburgh named Portland Street which is not far from a Pitt Street and a Dundas Street – although again it is not clear if there is any relevance to the Hong Kong Portland Street.

All that remains of the original commercial district is the Ault Store ( built in 1866 ), which started as a general store and housed the town's first library on the second floor ; the same building also served as the home of the Dundas News for its operation from 1876-79 when it was bought and absorbed by the Northfield News.

Dundas Street, Hong Kong, was also named for him.

He was elevated to the peerage as Baron Dundas of Aske in August 1794, and was also Lord Lieutenant and Vice Admiral of Orkney and Shetland, Councillor of state to the Prince of Wales ( later George IV ), President of the Society of Scottish Antiquaries and Colonel of the North York Militia.

He also did voice work in Pixar's A Bug's Life ( 1998 ) voicing the main antagonist Hopper, the leader of a vicious gang of grasshoppers.

It is also affiliated with 4 Gödel Prize winners, 4 Knuth Prize recipients, 10 IJCAI Computers and Thought Award winners, and about 15 Grace Murray Hopper Award winners for their work in the foundations of computer science.

He also advised his students, “ It isn ’ t the subject that counts but what you feel about it ” and “ Forget about art and paint pictures of what interests you in life .” In this manner, Henri influenced Hopper, as well as notable future artists George Bellows and Rockwell Kent.

Although he is best known for his oil paintings, Hopper initially achieved recognition for his watercolours and he also produced some commercially successful etchings.

The effective use of light and shadow to create mood is also central to Hopper ’ s methods.

Bright sunlight ( as an emblem of insight or revelation ), and the shadows it casts, also play symbolically powerful roles in Hopper paintings such as Early Sunday Morning ( 1930 ), Summertime ( 1943 ), Seven A. M. ( 1948 ), and Sun in an Empty Room ( 1963 ).

Urban architecture and cityscapes were also major subjects for Hopper.

Hopper also painted Portrait of Orleans ( 1950 ), a “ portrait ” of the Cape Cod town from its main street.

Charles Burchfield, whom Hopper admired and whom he was compared to, said of Hopper, “ he achieves such a complete verity that you can read into his interpretations of houses and conceptions of New York life any human implications you wish .” He also attributed Hopper ’ s success to his “ bold individualism … In him we have regained that sturdy American independence which Thomas Eakins gave us, but which for a time was lost .” Hopper considered this a high compliment since he considered Eakins the greatest American painter.

Hopper also rejected comparisons with Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton stating “ I think the American Scene painters caricatured America.

German director Wim Wenders also cites Hopper influence.

Canadian rock group The Weakerthans released their album Reunion Tour in 2007 featuring two songs inspired by and named after Hopper paintings, " Sun in an Empty Room ", and " Night Windows ", and have also referenced him in songs such as " Hospital Vespers ".

It also holds works by a wide range of influential European and American artists including Georges Braque, Marcel Duchamp, Walker Evans, Helen Frankenthaler, Alberto Giacometti, Arshile Gorky, Hans Hofmann, Edward Hopper, Paul Klee, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Dorothea Lange, Fernand Léger, Roy Lichtenstein, Morris Louis, René Magritte, Aristide Maillol, Joan Miró, Henry Moore, Kenneth Noland, Georgia O ' Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, Auguste Rodin, Mark Rothko, David Smith, Frank Stella, and hundreds of others.

He has also helped launch the careers of actors including Jack Nicholson, William Shatner, Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Talia Shire and Robert De Niro.

Paris Trout, starring Dennis Hopper, was also primarily filmed in the county.

It has a number of other distinctions as well, as the first ship named after a ( future ) First Lady and one of the few active vessels in the U. S. Navy named in honor of a woman ( see also USS Hopper ).

He was the recipient of the 1990 Mephisto Award for his doctoral dissertation and also the 1991 ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award for his contributions in architecture and algorithms for chess machines.

The first release was by Factory stalwarts The Durutti Column, the other main acts on the label were Hopper and Space Monkeys, and the label also gave a UK release to the first album by Stephin Merritt's side project The 6ths, Wasps ' Nests.

Courbet's influence can also be seen in the work of Edward Hopper, whose Bridge in Paris ( 1906 ) and Approaching a City ( 1946 ) have been described as Freudian echoes of Courbet's The Source of the Loue and The Origin of the World.

Young strikers Tom Hopper and Harry Panayiotou also made their debuts in 2012, Harry Panayiotou dramatically scoring the final goal in a 2-1 win against Leeds United in the last game of the 2011-2012 season.
