The dance styles in the state are based on the standard treatises, Abhinaya Darpana and Bharatarnava of Nandikeshwara, which is sub-divided into Nattuva Mala and Natya Mala.

Abhinaya Chandrika written by Maheshvara Mahapatra is a detailed study of the movements of the feet, hands, the standing postures, the movement and the dance repertoire.

; Abhinaya: An expressional dance which is an enactment of a song or poetry, where a story conveyed to the audience through mudras ( hand gestures ), bhavas ( facial expression ), eye movement and body movement.

Shobhana is famed for her Abhinaya, a pivotal element in Bharatanatyam.

Mudra is nearly mute, being able only to communicate his own name and the fact that he " speaks " by means of Abhinaya, a type of sign language used in classical Indian dance.
