* 1799 – The entire Dutch fleet is captured by British forces under the command of Sir Ralph Abercromby and Admiral Sir Charles Mitchell during the Second Coalition of the French Revolutionary Wars.

* 1704 – War of the Spanish Succession: Gibraltar is captured by an English and Dutch fleet, commanded by Admiral Sir George Rooke and allied with Archduke Charles.

He was posted to the battleship HMS Centurion in the Reserve Fleet in 1926 and became Assistant Fleet Wireless and Signals Officer of the Mediterranean Fleet under the command of Admiral Sir Roger Keyes in January 1927.

Sir Francis Drake, Vice Admiral ( 1540 – 27 January 1596 ) was an English sea captain, privateer, navigator, slaver, and politician of the Elizabethan era.

However, he was wrecked on HMS Victoria when it collided with HMS Camperdown ( the flagship of the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, Vice-Admiral Sir George Tryon ) off Tripoli on 22 June 1893 ; the Admiral, 21 officers and 350 men drowned.

When Admiral Dudley Pound enquired about aerial assets in trade and commerce defence, Chief of the Air Staff Cyril Newall, replied that there was not enough " jam " to go around and stated it was more advisable to risk losses on trade routes than weaken the RAF's ability to protect Britain from air attack and bomb its enemies.

Dudley served as Vice-Admiral and Lord Admiral from 1537 until 1547, during which time he set novel standards of navy organization and was an innovative commander at sea.

Being now a peer, Dudley became Lord Admiral and a Knight of the Garter in 1543 ; he was also admitted to the Privy Council.

In 1545 Lord Admiral John Dudley, Viscount Lisle welcomed Henry VIII of England | King Henry VIII on board the Henri Grace a Dieu, popularly called Great Harry.

As Lord Admiral, Dudley was responsible for creating the Council for Marine Causes, which for the first time co-ordinated the various tasks of maintaining the navy functioning and thus made English naval administration the most efficient in Europe.

John Dudley recovered the post of Lord Admiral immediately after the Protector's fall in October 1549, Thomas Seymour having been executed by his brother in March 1549.

Following the Irgun's detonation of a large bomb in a market in Haifa on 6 July 1938 the High Commissioner signalled the Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, requesting the assistance of naval vessels capable of providing landing parties.

During the Munich Crisis of 1938, Admiral Sir Dudley Pound, the commander of the British Mediterranean Fleet, was concerned about the survival of the aircraft carrier in the face of Italian opposition in the Mediterranean.

He attended the House of Lords irregularly and occasionally lent his name to press statements about the Royal Navy, particularly those relating to Admiral Dudley North, who had been relieved of his command of Gibraltar in 1940.

When John was born, his father was a young knight, son of the executed Edmund Dudley, councillor to Henry VII ; in 1537 he became vice-admiral and later Lord Admiral.

Admiral of the Fleet William Henry Dudley Boyle, 12th Earl of Cork, 12th Earl of Orrery GCB GCVO RN ( 30 November 1873 – 19 April 1967 ) was a career Royal Navy officer who had achieved the rank of full Admiral before succeeding a cousin in 1934 to the family titles, chief of which is Earl of Cork.

Warspite eventually proceeded to the Mediterranean Fleet to serve as the flagship of Admiral Dudley Pound, Commander-in-Chief.

On the night of 18 July King Henry dined aboard Great Harry, the flagship of Admiral John Dudley, Viscount Lisle.

Just a month before the war began, Pound knowingly advised his replacement, Admiral Andrew Cunningham, to consider the possibility.
