On 30 June 1690 ( O. S ) the French navy secured victory off Beachy Head in the English Channel where Admiral Tourville defeated Admiral Torrington's inferior Anglo-Dutch fleet.

At the action off Cape Barfleur on 29 May, the French fleet of 44 rated vessels under Admiral Tourville put up stern resistance against Admirals Rooke's and Russell's 82 rated English and Dutch vessels.

In May 1692 the French fleet of 44 ships of the line under the command of Admiral Anne Hilarion de Costentin, Comte de Tourville ( by virtue of his title, widely known in English sources as " Tourville "), was preparing to transport an invading army of Franco-Irish troops to restore James II to the English throne.

The English and Dutch lost some 11 ships in total ( sources vary ), whereas the French did not lose a single vessel ; but although control of the English Channel temporarily fell into French hands, Admiral Tourville failed to pursue the Allied fleet with sufficient ardour, allowing it to escape to the river Thames.
