According to Nevil Shute Norway it was a very advanced engine ( and the price struck Shute as low ; much lower than competing engines on the basis of power-to-weight ratio ), so its loss was a major disaster for Airspeed ( and Britain ).

Despite setbacks and tribulations, including the usual problem of the start-up business, liquidity, Airspeed Limited eventually gained significant recognition when its Envoy aircraft was chosen for the King's Flight.

Due to a control failure an Airspeed Ambassador freight aircraft, G-AMAD, deviated from the runway on landing at Heathrow and struck G-ARPI and its neighbouring sister aircraft, G-ARPT, while they were parked unoccupied near Terminal 1, resulting in six fatalities from the freighter's eight occupants.

In 1948, East Anglian operated its first inclusive tour ( IT ) charter from Southend to Ostend, and by winter 1948 had acquired seven additional aircraft ( five de Havilland Dragon Rapides, a Miles Aerovan and an Auster Airspeed Courier ).

* February 6 – The British European Airways Airspeed Ambassador G-ALZU Lord Burghley, operating as Flight 609, crashes on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Riem Airport in West Germany, killing 23, including eight Manchester United footballers.

The CAA and its predecessors have operated 50 aircraft of 13, primarily British, aircraft types including de Havilland Tiger Moths, Avro Ansons, Airspeed Consuls, Percival Princes, de Havilland Doves, Hawker Siddeley HS 748s and Hawker Siddeley HS 125s.

On 16 March, an Airspeed Oxford aircraft located the crashed Lancaster on the mountain and reported its position back to the ground search teams.

Airspeed Oxfords were often to be seen landing and taking off from its runways, until the airfield reverted to USAAF control in October.

In the first year of its existence, 790 aircraft were assembled at Brooklyn, consisting of 254 Airspeed Oxfords, 154 Miles Masters, 148 Avro Ansons, 79 Harvards, 78 Fairey Battles, 63 Martin Baltimores, nine Bristol Beauforts and five de Havilland Dominies.

On 6 June 1944, with its headquarters at RAF Barton Hall, Preston, Lancashire, it comprised two sector stations, RAF Honiley and RAF Woodvale, eight Operational Training Units, three Tactical Exercise Units, the AI Conversion Unit, the Fighter Leaders ' School, No. 2 Aircraft Delivery Flight, No. 58 Repair and Salvage Unit, three other support / supply units, and the 9 Group Communications Flight flying Hawker Hurricanes and Airspeed Oxfords from Samlesbury Aerodrome.

Starting its first flight on 1 May 1947, the Singapore-based carrier flew on domestic routes between Kuala Lumpur, Ipoh, Penang and Singapore on an Airspeed Consul twin engined airplane.

The company reverted to the company name of Airspeed Limited on 25 January 1944.

He left Vickers shortly afterwards and in 1931 founded the aircraft construction company Airspeed Ltd.

During World War II, another well-known aircraft company, Airspeed Ltd, apparently set up an almost forgotten design office at Fairmile Manor and is believed to have designed the Ambassador airliner there before moving back to Portsmouth in the late 1940s.

Cobham was also one of the founding directors of Airspeed Limited, the aircraft manufacturing company started by Nevil Shute Norway ( perhaps better known as the famous novelist, Nevil Shute ).

Norway, together with the designer Hessell Tiltman, having been discharged by the Airship Guarantee Company ( a subsidiary of Vickers ), after the R101 disaster also junked the more successful R100, decided to found their own small aircraft business: Cobham was an early and enthusiastic recruit: indeed, it was thanks to Sir Alan-who placed early orders for two " Off Plan " aircraft ( the three-engined ten seater Ferry ) for his National Aviation Day Limited company – that Airspeed managed to commence manufacturing at all.

The team's chartered plane, an Airspeed Ambassador owned by British European Airways, left Belgrade on 6 February and stopped at Munich to refuel.

In June, 1940, formal announcement was made that the de Havilland Aircraft Co., Ltd., had completed negotiations for the purchase from Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., of that firm's holding of Airspeed ordinary shares.

In 1951 Airspeed Limited completely merged with de Havilland.

Trainers and more airliners in New Zealand were camouflaged and armed and various types, such as the North American Harvard, Hawker Hind, Airspeed Oxford and even the de Havilland Tiger Moth, formed shadow bomber, army co-operation and fighter squadrons for use in the event of invasion.

This led to a split into the IIA and IIB types, with the de Havilland Dove and Airspeed Ambassador filling the IIA requirement, and the Vickers VC. 2 Viceroy and the Armstrong Whitworth AW. 55 Apollo filling IIB ( specification 8 / 46 ).

For this task large numbers of De Havilland Tiger Moth, Airspeed Oxford and North American Harvard were manufactured or assembled locally and second-hand biplanes were acquired — such as Hawker Hinds and Vickers Vincents — as well as other types for specialised training such as Avro Ansons and Supermarine Walrus.

Local enterprises manufactured or assembled large numbers of De Havilland Tiger Moth, Airspeed Oxford and North American Harvard training aircraft, and the RNZAF also acquired second-hand biplanes such as Hawker Hinds and Vickers Vincents, as well as other types for specialised training such as Avro Ansons and Supermarine Walruses.

To begin with the airline used Airspeed Ambassadors, later switching to Hawker Siddeley HS 748s, De Havilland Comets and BAC One-Elevens.

During World War II, two British military gliders took their names from the brothers: the Slingsby Hengist and the Airspeed Horsa.

Nevil Shute Norway wrote that the loss of such a technically advanced engine was a great loss to Britain as well as Airspeed, and blamed the over-cautious high civil servants of the Air Ministry.

Airspeed Limited was established to build aeroplanes in 1931 in York, England, by A. H. Tiltman and Nevil Shute Norway ( the aeronautical engineer and famous writer, who used his forenames as his pen-name ).

In March 1933, the firm moved to Portsmouth and, in the following year, became associated with the Tyneside ship builder Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson Limited and became Airspeed ( 1934 ) Limited in August 1934.

All Airspeed aeroplanes under manufacture or development in 1936 were to use a Wolseley radial aero engine of about which was under development by Nuffield, the Wolseley Scorpio.

Airspeed went on to produce the superbly streamlined pressurised twin-engined piston airliner called the AS57 Ambassador.

The Allied glider force had been rebuilt after Normandy until by 16 September it numbered 2, 160 CG-4A Waco gliders, 916 Airspeed Horsas ( 812 RAF and 104 US Army ) and 64 General Aircraft Hamilcars.

The innovation of fitting a retractable undercarriage to the Airspeed Courier, and his work on R100, earned Shute a Fellowship of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

Orders for a further 10 Ju 52m, along with eighteen Junkers Ju 86 and seven Airspeed Envoys ( four for the airline and three for the South African Air Force ) were placed.
