Beginning early in the war and for its remainder, the Union controlled the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

Pamlico Sound is linked on the north with Albemarle Sound through Roanoke Sound and Croatan Sound ( passages ).

Seven sounds making up the whole: Albemarle Sound, Currituck Sound, Croatan Sound, Pamlico Sound, Bogue Sound, Core Sound, and Roanoke Sound.

50 hours prior to Isabel making landfall, the National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane watch from Little River, South Carolina to Chincoteague, Virginia, including the Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds and the lower Chesapeake Bay.

In addition, a portion of land along the Roanoke, Tar, Neuse, Cape Fear Ecosystem — so named for the rivers which flow into the Albemarle, Currituck, and Pamlico Sounds — has been named for Kuralt, honoring his having given as much time to nature and wildlife as to people in his " On the Road " and Sunday Morning stories.

The coastal plain encompasses the two largest landlocked sounds in the United States ; Albemarle Sound in the north and Pamlico Sound in the south.

As a result of the battles, Union forces could move at will in Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds.

Consequently the shad run correspondingly later in the year passing from south to north along the coast, commencing in Georgia in January ; in March in the waters tributary to Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds ; in April in the Potomac ; and in May and June in northern streams generally from Delaware to Canada.

The largest of these is Pamlico Sound, immediately behind Hatteras Island ; to its north is the second largest, Albemarle Sound, which extends almost to the southern border of Virginia.

Wise, whose command included Albemarle Sound and Roanoke Island, but not Pamlico Sound and its cities.

With the reorganization also came the acquisition of the Albemarle and Pantego Railroad in North Carolina from the John L. Roper Lumber Company, extending the line from Mackeys on the other side of the Albemarle Sound from Edenton south to Belhaven on the Pungo River, a branch of the Pamlico River.

The sounds were linked to Norfolk, Virginia by the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal and the Dismal Swamp Canal.

The Chesapeake Bay forms a link in the Intracoastal Waterway, connecting the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal ( linking the bay to the Delaware River ) with the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal ( linking the bay, via the Elizabeth River, to the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina ).

All three rivers are tributaries of the Chowan River, which flows south into Albemarle Sound, North Carolina.

Most of the county's streams drain into the Appomattox River, a tributary of the James River, but in the southeastern corner of the county, streams drain via the Nottoway River into the Chowan River and thence into Albemarle Sound in North Carolina.

During this era, the Blackwater River was used to transport goods to and from the Albemarle Sound in North Carolina.

Elizabeth City is home to the Museum of the Albemarle, the northeastern regional branch of the North Carolina Museum of History.

As a further token of Charles II's gratitude, in 1663 Albemarle was named one of eight Lords Proprietors given title to a huge tract of land in North America which became the Province of Carolina, the present-day American states of North and South Carolina.

Along Chesapeake's segment of the Intracoastal Waterway, where the Great Bridge locks mark the transition between the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake and Albemarle Canal, lies the site of the Battle of Great Bridge.

As head of the Great Treasury Commission of 1667 – 1672, Albemarle transformed accounting methods and allowed the Crown greater control over expenses.

The Great Dismal Swamp is in southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina between the James River ( Norfolk, Virginia ) and the Albemarle Sound ( Edenton, North Carolina ).

In May 1763, George Washington made his first visit to the Great Dismal Swamp and suggested draining it and digging a north-south canal through it to connect the waters of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia and Albemarle Sound in North Carolina.
