After a string of DNFs since his win in the second race of the season in Portugal, Ayrton Senna drove a great race into second from a lowly ( for him ) 14th in the grid with Alboreto third in in the spare Ferrari 156 / 85 to retain a share of the World Championship lead.

Alboreto, frustrated that Ferrari's late season reliability had cost him the World Championship ( he led the points table until the Dutch Grand Prix ) drove his Ferrari 156 / 85 back to the pits with the rear of the car on fire.

It was also the only race where both Ferrari's were on the front row with Alboreto qualifying only 0. 199 behind his team mate.

Until changes were made to the Ferrari's V6 engine late in the season, this meant that Berger and Alboreto were often vulnerable to attack from the leading atmospheric cars, with Berger estimating that he could often only use of the cars available during a race if he wanted to finish.

Senna demonstrated his proficiency in wet conditions by finishing the race at least one lap ahead of every car except second-place finisher Michele Alboreto.

Patrese's gearbox dropped oil onto the track which took off Niki Lauda and nearly took off Teo Fabi and race leader Michele Alboreto ; Alboreto's off handed the lead to Alain Prost.

Luckily for those with damaged cars ( especially championship leader Alboreto ) the first lap was declared null and void and the race was completely re-started meaning those with damaged cars were permitted to start in the team spares.

On lap 22, Mansell pitted early due to a loose wheel balance weight and for three laps Alboreto led the race.

On lap 34, Michele Alboreto retired, his Ferrari experiencing a similar engine problem as Berger allowing Thierry Boutsen to take the third place, which he maintained until the finish of the race.

Berger's pole time of 1: 10. 133 was three seconds slower than the 1987 pole time set by Nelson Piquet and although on pole he was far from confident going into the race stating that the Ferrari's could not live with the McLarens on fuel consumption, his words were echoed by Alboreto.

For his part Alboreto secured his first front row start since he scored pole in the opening race of the season in Brazil, it was the last time the Italian would start an F1 race from the front row.

This dropped him to 4th behind Andrea De Cesaris, Elio de Angelis and Prost ; he caught and passed his compatriots but could not catch Prost ; whose gap was too big for Alboreto to catch him with the amount of remaining laps.

The second row was occupied by Teo Fabi in the Benetton B187 and Alain Prost's McLaren MP4 / 3 ; " home " team Ferrari took the whole third row with Michele Alboreto ahead of Gerhard Berger.

Pre-qualifying had been reorganised going into the second half of the season ; no points in the first half of the season meant that the Larrousse team with their Lamborghini V12 engines joined the session, where Philippe Alliot was now partnered by Michele Alboreto who had left Tyrrell over a rumored sponsorship dispute before the French Grand Prix ( Alboreto was personally sponsored by Marlboro and Ken Tyrrell had signed the rival Camel brand as the team's major sponsor ).

Senna accidentally hit Schlesser and was livid, whilst the tifosi erupted ; Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto sat first and second, where they remained at the finish.

For the first ten laps, the Renaults steadily pulled away from Alboreto, with Arnoux now leading Prost.

Among the leaders, Alboreto began inching closer to Prost again, and Watson continued to close on both of them.

Niki Lauda's McLaren retired on lap 54, while Alboreto had eliminated the gap to Prost, and gotten by him to take his first lead in a Grand Prix.

Nelson Piquet was 4th on the grid in his Brabham-BMW, World Champion elect Alain Prost was 5th in his McLaren-TAG Porsche, with the Ferrari of 1985 World Championship runner up Michele Alboreto rounding out the top six qualifiers.

McLaren mechanics got the car going and Prost started from pitlane along with Senna and the Ferrari F1 / 87 of Michele Alboreto.

Behind Berger developed a sparkling battle between Piquet, Prost, Alboreto and Senna.

Berger followed Prost with Alboreto, Cheever, Boutsen, Patrese and Piquet.

Senna made it to the corner first, and led by. 45 seconds after one lap, ahead of Prost, Alessandro Nannini, Nigel Mansell, Alex Caffi, Stefano Modena, Martin Brundle, Gerhard Berger, Andrea de Cesaris and Michele Alboreto.

In his home race, Prost took pole and won convincingly, while fellow Frenchman Jean Alesi made his debut for the Tyrrell team, replacing Alboreto due to the team now having Camel sponsorship which conflicted with his personal Marlboro sponsorship.

The following race at Paul Ricard saw another 1-2 for McLaren, this time with Prost at the helm for his home Grand Prix, followed by the Ferraris of Alboreto and Berger, with only the former on the lead lap.

At the end of the first lap, de Cesaris led by two seconds, followed by Arnoux, Lauda, Bruno Giacomelli, Villeneuve, Alain Prost, Didier Pironi, Rosberg, Piquet, Michele Alboreto, John Watson, Cheever and Andretti.
