The federal prison on Alcatraz Island no longer functions, but the complex is a popular tourist site.

Lustig pleaded guilty at his trial and was sentenced to 20 years in Alcatraz Island, California.

In October of that year, Baez became the first major artist to perform in a professional concert presentation on Alcatraz Island ( a former U. S. federal prison ) in San Francisco, California, in a benefit for her sister Mimi's Bread and Roses organization.

Along with other celebrities, she supported the Alcatraz Island occupation by American Indians in 1969, which was intended to call attention to failures of the government in treaty rights and the movement for greater Indian sovereignty.

The first Spaniard to document the island was Juan Manuel de Ayala in 1775, who charted San Francisco Bay, and named one of the three islands he identified as the " La Isla de los Alcatraces ," which translates as " The Island of the Pelicans ," In 1993, the National Park Service published a plan entitled Alcatraz Development Concept and Environmental Assessment.

On February 6, 2008, the Alcatraz Island Global Peace Center Proposition C failed to pass, with 72 % of voters rejecting the proposition.

* November 16 – Al Capone is released from Alcatraz.

* May 2 – Six inmates unsuccessfully try to escape from Alcatraz Prison.

He was best known for the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers ( 1956 ) and five films with Clint Eastwood, including Dirty Harry ( 1971 ) and Escape from Alcatraz ( 1979 ).

These included the policiers Coogan's Bluff and Dirty Harry, the Budd Boetticher-scripted Western Two Mules for Sister Sara, the cynical American Civil War melodrama The Beguiled and the prison-break picture Escape from Alcatraz.

These films in particular, as well as others including Play Misty for Me ( 1971 ), Thunderbolt and Lightfoot ( 1974 ), The Outlaw Josey Wales ( 1976 ), Escape from Alcatraz ( 1979 ), Tightrope ( 1984 ), Pale Rider ( 1985 ), Heartbreak Ridge ( 1986 ), In the Line of Fire ( 1993 ), The Bridges of Madison County ( 1995 ), and Gran Torino ( 2008 ), have all received commercial success and critical acclaim.

Eastwood starred in the thriller Escape from Alcatraz in 1979, the last of his films to be directed by Don Siegel.

It was based on the true story of Frank Lee Morris who, along with John and Clarence Anglin, escaped from the notorious Alcatraz prison in 1962.

After eight months of recovery following his brief bout of being clinically dead from the shooting, Sascha is incarcerated along with Nick in the newly reopened Alcatraz prison.

The next day, Hummel and his men, along with more renegade Marines ( Captains Frye and Darrow who have never previously served under Hummel ) seize control of Alcatraz during a guided tour and take 81 tourists hostage in the prison cells.

Mason is the only Alcatraz inmate ever to escape through the prison's uncharted tunnels, doing so in 1963, one year after imprisonment.

The team infiltrates Alcatraz, through the underground tunnels with Mason's guidance.
