Alexander I or Aleksandar Obrenović ( Cyrillic: Александар Обреновић ; 14 August 1876 – 11 June 1903 ) was king of Serbia from 1889 to 1903 when he and his wife, Queen Draga, were assassinated by a group of Army officers, led by Colonel Dragutin Dimitrijević

He had stabilised the Allied position at the First Battle of El Alamein, but after a visit in August 1942, the Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, replaced him as C-in-C with Alexander and William Gott as commander of the Eighth Army in the Western Desert.

The main weapons of assassination chosen organised the successful assassination of King Alexander I of Serbia and his consort Draga ; he confirmed that Captain Dragutin Dimitrijevic, who had personally led the group of Army officers who killed the royal couple in the Old Palace at Belgrade on the night of 28 / 29 May 1903 ( Old Style ), was also the Black Hand's leader.

Reuben Breed ( Episcopal ), Michael Lodsin ( Baptist ), Brigadier Thomas Johnson ( Salvation Army ), Ludmila K. Foxlee ( YWCA ), Athena Marmaroff ( Woman's Christian Temperance Union ), Alexander Harkavy ( HIAS ), and Cecilia Greenstone and Cecilia Razovsky ( National Council of Jewish Women ).

Sir Alexander Hamilton-Gordon ( 1817 – 1890 ), eldest son of the second marriage of the fourth Earl, was a General in the Army and sat as Member of Parliament for Aberdeenshire East.

His eldest son, Sir Alexander Hamilton-Gordon was also a General in the Army.

They decided to replace Auchinleck, appointing XIII Corps commander William Gott to the Eighth Army command and General Sir Harold Alexander as C-in-C Middle East Command.

In response, Army Group Upper Rhine ( Heeresgruppe Oberrhein ) group was formed to engage the advancing U. S. 7th Army ( under command of General Alexander Patch ) and French 1st Army ( led by General Jean de Lattre de Tassigny ) in the Alsace region along the west bank of the Rhine.

Finally, in August 1949, the National Army under Marshal Alexander Papagos launched an offensive that forced the remaining insurgents to surrender or flee across the northern border into the territory of Greece's northern Communist neighbors.

Alexander was then in February 1928 promoted to colonel ( backdated to 14 May 1926 ) and was the next month appointed Officer Commanding the Irish Guards Regimental District and 140th ( 4th London ) Infantry Brigade in the Territorial Army a post he held until January 1930, when he again returned to study, attending the Imperial Defence College for one year.

Following the coronation celebration, Alexander returned to India, where he was made the honorary colonel of the 3rd Battalion 2nd Punjab Regiment, and then in October 1937 was promoted to the rank of major-general, making Alexander the youngest general in the British Army.

Commanding what would later be the Fourteenth Army, Alexander was unable to fulfil his orders to hold Rangoon, which was abandoned on 6-7 March.

Alexander presided over Montgomery's victory at the Second Battle of El Alamein and the advance of the Eighth Army to Tripoli, for which Alexander was elevated to a knight grand cross of the Order of the Bath, and, after the Anglo-American forces from Operation Torch and the Eighth Army converged in Tunisia in February 1943, they were brought under the unified command of a newly-formed 18th Army Group headquarters, commanded by Alexander and reporting to Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander in the Mediterranean at the Allied Forces Headquarters.

The Axis forces in Tunisia surrendered by May 1943, and Alexander's command became the 15th Army Group, which was, under Eisenhower, responsible for mounting in July the Allied invasion of Sicily, again seeing Alexander controlling two armies: Montgomery's Eighth Army and George S. Patton's Seventh United States Army.

Shortly after Bernard Montgomery had been appointed to command II Corps, Alexander was, while still on the beachhead, placed in command of I Corps, and left the beach on the last destroyer on 3 June after ensuring that all British troops had been evacuated.

After Dunkirk Alexander returned to the UK and continued to command I Corps, now guarding the coasts of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

Alexander called the removal of Longstreet the critical juncture of the battle: " I have always believed that, but for Longstreet's fall, the panic which was fairly underway in Hancock's Corps would have been extended & have resulted in Grant's being forced to retreat back across the Rapidan.

At the end of his one-year tour, Alexander Haig returned to the continental United States to become Regimental Commander of the Third Regiment of the Corps of Cadets at West Point, under the also newly arrived Commandant, Brigadier General Bernard W. Rogers.

Alexander is famous for his son, United States Marine Corps commandant Archibald Henderson.

He prepared five different designs for the building terminating the eastern side of the square, but the Guards Corps building was awarded to Alexander Brullov.

William Erskine ( 5th Division ), Alexander Campbell ( 6th Division ) and 300 Portuguese cavalry under Count Barbacena were detached, facing the French II Corps.

This division was part of XI Corps, which in turn was part of General Alexander von Kluck's First Army.

In 1922, he served as an adjutant to Major Alexander Vandegrift, a future Commandant of the Marine Corps.

This would also reflect the orders he had received from Alexander to "... carry out an assault landing on the beaches in the vicinity of Rome with the object of cutting the enemy lines of communication and threatening the rear of the German XIV Corps the Gustav Line.

Meanwhile, Lucian Truscott, who had been promoted from the command of U. S. 3rd Infantry Division to replace Lucas as commander of VI Corps on February 22, worked with his staff on the plans for a decisive attack as part of a general offensive which Alexander was planning for May and which would include a major offensive on the Gustav Line, Operation Diadem.

He argued to Alexander that VI Corps did not have the strength to trap the German 10th Army and Alexander, instead of making his requirements clear, was conciliatory and gave the impression that a push on Rome was still a possibility if Buffalo ran into difficulties.

Alexander had planned for Montgomery to strike across the river on its coastal plain on 20 November with the V Corps ( Indian 8th Infantry and 78th Infantry Divisions ).

Alexander called a halt to the offensive, instructing Montgomery to maintain sufficient activity to pin LXXVI Panzer Corps and prevent troops from being sent across to reinforce XIV Corps facing 5th Army.

Alexander took command of Allied land forces in Burma in early March with William Slim arriving shortly afterwards from commanding a division in Iraq to take command of its principal formation, Burma Corps.

However, the acting commander of II Corps, Maj-Gen Bernard Montgomery, advised Gort that Barker was in an unfit state to be left in final command, and recommended that Maj-Gen Harold Alexander of 1st Division should be put in charge.

In 1873, Barton S. Alexander completed a report for the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers that was the first attempt at creating a Central Valley Project.

Burk asked if electrical engineer E. Alexander Scott of the Engineers Club could accompany him, and this was agreed to.

In 1866, he received a scholarship to study at the Alexander I Institute of Communication Engineers in St Petersburg.

One of these albums came into the possession of Alexander Mackenzie, Army Corps Chief of Engineers.

" During the summer Alexander worked as a draftsman for Marsh Engineers, a Des Moines bridge-designing firm and in 1912, he received a bachelor of science degree becoming The University of Iowa's first black football player and engineer.

The other players selected were Alexander Morten in goal, William Clegg ( whose brother Charles had played in the previous match ) and Royal Engineers Pelham von Donop and Alfred Goodwyn.

The Lighthouse Board resulted from this mandate, and its original members consisted of William B. Shubrick, and Samuel F. Du Pont, U. S. Navy ; James Kearney, U. S. Topographical Engineers ; civilian academics Alexander Dallas Bache, Superintendent U. S. Coast Survey and Joseph Henry ; and Lt. Thornton Jenkins, U. S. Navy, who acted as Secretary.
