The Rua do Barão is one of the streets of the Freguesia da Sé, which begins at the Rua São João da Praça ( where once stood the Door of the Alfama ) and ends at Rua Augusto Rosa ( at the Cathedral's walls ).

Overlooking the Alfama is the mediaeval Castle of São Jorge, royal residence until the early 16th century and now offering the best views of the city.

In the " Poem of Alexander ", in the " Milagros de Nuestra Señora ", and in the " Duelo de la Virgen " of Gonzalo de Berceo, all of the 13th century, Aljama or Alfama is employed to designate the people of ancient Jerusalem ; and the historian of the 16th century, Mariana, uses Aljama for the synagogue: " they devastated their houses and their aljamas.

The Arabic influence is also visible in placenames, especially in the southern provinces, such as the Algarve, Alfama and Fátima.

The Alfama district of the old city is largely untouched owing to its situation on a rocky massif, as is Belem.

Among the churches of the Alfama are Lisbon Cathedral ( 12th-14th centuries ), the oldest of the city and located to the West of the neighbourhood, the Convent of the Grace ( Convento da Graça, 18th century ), near the Castle, the mannerist Monastery of São Vicente de Fora ( late 16th-18th century ), where the Kings of the House of Braganza are buried, and the baroque Church of Santa Engrácia ( 17th century ), now converted into a National Pantheon for important Portuguese personalities.

Most philosophers rejected that on the grounds that the Alfama, Lisbon's red-light district, suffered only minor damage.

The Kingdom of Aragon was placed under his patronage, and in gratitude for his assistance to its armies King Peter II of Aragon founded ( 1201 ) the Order of St. George of Alfama in the district of that name.

It comprises the grid of streets north of the Praça do Comércio, roughly between the Cais do Sodré and the Alfama district beneath the Lisbon Castle, and extends northwards towards the Rossio and Figueira squares and the Avenida da Liberdade, a tree-lined boulevard noted for its tailoring shops and cafes.

The great 1755 Lisbon Earthquake did not destroy the Alfama, which has remained a picturesque labyrinth of narrow streets and small squares.

It was introduced in the port districts like Alfama, Mouraria and Bairro Alto.

Other historic awards and distinctions include the Spanish Order of the Golden Fleece, the Order of Isabella the Catholic, the Order of Alfonso X, the Order of Marie Louise, the Order of Saint Raimundo de Penafort, the Order of Military Merit, the Order of Naval Merit, the Order of Aerial Merit, the Order of Civil Merit, the Order of Cultural Merit, the Order of Calatrava, the Order of the Knights of Santiago, the Order of Sant Jordi d ' Alfama, and the Order of Alcántara, among others.

Alfama became inhabited by the fishermen and the poor, and its condition as the neighbourhood of the poor continues to this day.
