Alston and Harlem
Charles Henry Alston ( November 28, 1907 – April 27, 1977 ) was an African-American painter, sculptor, illustrator, muralist and teacher who lived and worked in the New York City neighborhood of Harlem.
Alston was active in the Harlem Renaissance ; Alston was the first African American supervisor for the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project.
During this time Alston founded the Harlem Artists ’ Guild with Savage and Elba Lightfoot to work towards equality in WPA art programs in New York.
During his long professional career, Alston significantly enriched the cultural life of Harlem.
More importantly, he attended classes at the Harlem Art Workshop, taught by the African American artist Charles Alston.
In addition to getting paid, he was able to study and work with such notable Harlem Renaissance artists as Charles Alston and Henry Bannarn in the Alston-Bannarn workshop.
Artists associated with the Harlem Renaissance include Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Charles Alston, Augusta Savage, Archibald Motley, Lois Mailou Jones, Palmer Hayden and Sargent Johnson.

In 1970 Alston was commissioned by the Community Church of New York to create a bust of Martin Luther King Jr. for $ 5, 000, with limited copies produced.
Confirmation was received in November 2009 that a grant of £ 100, 000 had been awarded by the Groundwork UK Community Spaces programme which will be used to fund the restoration of three historic railway bridges on the former Haltwhistle to Alston line.

Alston and led
After the Dodgers moved to Los Angeles, Alston led the team to pennants in 1959, 1963, 1965, 1966 and 1974, and three more world championships ( 1959, 1963, 1965 ).
A group of young men from Alston, led by a Mr. Vince Peart, began distributing leaflets across the north of England and set up the " Alston Moor Regeneration Society " ( founded after a pub survey upped the men-women ratio to 17-1 ), all in an effort to persuade women to come to Alston to find love.
