Altan khan chose the Gelug order of Tibetan Buddhism ( founded by Tsongkhapa, 1357-1419 ).

The Khong Tayiji became sub-Khan when Altan Khan of the Tümed tümen installed the Khong Tayiji as assistant khan.

The Khalkha oral version calls him Altan Bogdo khan.

Yonten Gyatso ( 1589 – 1616 ), the 4th Dalai Lama, and a non-Tibetan, was the grandson of Altan Khan.

During that same year, Enya was also a member of Ragairne, the band of Altan front-woman Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh.

It has been commonly claimed that the title " Dalai Lama " was first bestowed by the Mongolian ruler Altan Khan upon Sonam Gyatso in 1578.

The Gelug-Mongol alliance was further strengthened as after Sonam Gyatso's death, his incarnation was found to be Altan Khan's great-grandson.

The city was founded in 1581 by the Tumed Mongol ruler Altan Khan, in a marshy oasis on the steppes.

The title " Dalai Lama " itself was bestowed upon the third lama of the Gelug tulku lineage by Altan Khan ( not to be confused with the Altan Khans of the Khalkha ), and means, in Mongolian, " Ocean of Wisdom.

Sonam Gyatso publicly announced that he was a reincarnation of the Tibetan Sakya monk Drogön Chögyal Phagpa ( 1235 – 1280 ) who converted Kublai Khan, while Altan Khan was a reincarnation of Kublai Khan ( 1215 – 1294 ), the famous ruler of the Mongols and Emperor of China, and that they had come together again to cooperate in propagating the Buddhist religion.

Last but not least, Yonten Gyatso, the fourth Dalai Lama, was a grandson of Altan Khan.

Altan Khan ( 1507 – 1582 ; ), whose given name was Anda ( ᠠᠨᠳᠠ in Mongolian language ), was the ruler of the Tümet Mongols and de facto ruler of the Right Wing, or western tribes, of the Mongols.

Borjigin Barsboladiin Altan was the second son of Bars Bolud Jinong, and a grandson of Batumongke Dayan Khan who had re-unified the Mongolian nobility in an attempt to regain the glory of the Yuan Dynasty.

After Gün Bilig's death in 1542, Altan became the de facto leader of the whole of the Right Wing and was given the title, " Tösheetü Sechen Khan.

Altan Khan, who controlled the Ordos tumen of the Huang He or Yellow River was well placed to keep pressure on the Chinese and the Oirat Mongols in Tibet while developing both agriculture and trade.

In 1571, Altan Khan was granted the title Shunyi Wang (" Obedient and Righteous King ") from the Longqing Emperor ( March 4, 1537-July 5, 1572 ), the 12th emperor of China ( Ming dynasty ).

In 1552, after the Oirats once again challenged the Eastern Mongols, Altan Khan swept up from Inner Mongolia with Tümed and Ordos cavalry units, pushing elements of various Oirat tribes from Karakorum to the Kobdo region in northwest Mongolia, reuniting most of Mongolia in the process ( Grousset, 1970: 510 ).

Most artists were paid and most claims were settled in 2006 as Compass Records ( who would later sign Altan ) bought the company.

The movie starred the cast of his usual plays, most notably Demet Akbağ, Altan Erkekli, and Cem Yılmaz.

Traces of Clannad's legacy can be heard in the music of many artists, including Enya, Donna Taggart, Altan, Capercaillie, The Corrs, Loreena McKennitt, Anúna, Riverdance and U2.

In 1542 the Mongol leader Altan Khan began to harass China along the northern border.

In 1578 the Mongol ruler Altan Khan bestowed the title Dalai Lama on Sonam Gyatso.

However, the 14th Dalai Lama asserts that Altan Khan did not intend to bestow a title as such and that he intended only to translate the name " Sonam Gyatso " into Mongolian.

Sonam Gyatsho proclaimed Altan Khan to be the reincarnation of Khublai Khan, and in return, Altan Khan gave the title Dalai Lama to Sonam Gyatsho.

Altan Khan posthumously awarded the title to his two predecessors, making Sonam Gyatsho the 3rd Dalai Lama.

He found this patron in the Altan Khan.

Altan Khan first invited the 3rd Dalai Lama to Mongolia in 1569, but apparently the Dalai Lama refused to go and sent a disciple again, who reported back to the Dalai Lama about the great opportunity to spread Buddhist teachings throughout Mongolia.

In 1573 Altan Khan took some Tibetan Buddhist monks prisoner.

Altan Khan invited the 3rd Dalai Lama to Mongolia again in 1571 and embraced Tibetan Buddhism.

Thousands of animals were given to him as offerings and five hundred horsemen had been sent to escort him to Altan Khan's court.

When they arrived there, they were greeted by over ten thousand people including Altan Khan dressed in a white robe to symbolize his devotion to the Dharma.

Some sources say this first meeting between Sonam Gyatso and Altan Khan took place in Amdo or near ( lake ) Kokonor, rather than in Mongolia itself.

Further, some claim that Altan Khan bestowed the title Dalai on Sonam Gyatso, while the latter gave the title of Brahma, the king of religion, to Altan Khan.
