Amid Arab and Soviet political pressures on Syria and an emergency meeting of Arab League foreign ministers scheduled to discuss the issue on June 8, Amal declared a unilateral ceasefire the next day.

In December 1985, the various Christian militias, the Shiite Amal Movement and the Druze Progressive Socialist Party met in Damascus reaching agreement on political reforms as well as special relations with Syria.

In 1985, taking advantage of his journey in France, and under the pressure of the Syrian regime, his former allies of the progressive socialist Party and the group Amal turned against him, as he was as opposed to Syrian dominion over Lebanon as he was to Israel.
