Amtrak operates passenger rail service to and from major north-eastern cities.

Amtrak, the national rail passenger system, provides daily service from Montpelier, operating the Vermonter between St. Albans, Vermont and Washington, D. C. Greyhound Bus Lines operates buses that serve Montpelier.

The Port Authority operates the Port Authority Trans-Hudson ( PATH ) rapid transit system linking lower and midtown Manhattan with New Jersey, the AirTrain Newark system linking Newark International Airport with New Jersey Transit and Amtrak via a station on the Northeast Corridor rail line, and the AirTrain JFK system linking JFK with Howard Beach ( Subway ) and Jamaica ( Subway and Long Island Rail Road ).

Amtrak operates the Amtrak Cascades service linking Vancouver and Seattle.

The city also operates the Palmdale Transportation Center which serves as the hub for public transit services including Metrolink trains, Antelope Valley Transit Authority, Amtrak California's Thruway Motorcoach and Greyhound.

CSX Transportation owns the track over which Amtrak operates.

Amtrak, the national passenger rail system, operates its Wolverine from Pontiac to Chicago via Detroit and Battle Creek, Michigan.

Pan Am Railways ( formerly the Boston and Maine Railroad ) operates the main railroad line from Boston to Portland, which is utilized by Amtrak and by freight trains, running through Plaistow.

Today, Amtrak operates two main types of sleeping car: the bi-level Superliner sleeping cars, built from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s, and the single-level Viewliner sleeping cars, built in the mid 1990s.

The CSX Railway, ( also known as the Charleston-Savannah Railway ) currently operates both freight trains and passenger trains ( via Amtrak ) along the lines, but do not stop at Hardeeville.

Amtrak operates the Alpine Station on the former Southern Pacific Railroad's Sunset Line.

Amtrak operates a station in Culpeper, station code CLP.

United Airlines operates a ticketing counter in the Amtrak section.

Amtrak operates intercity train service along the New Haven and Hudson Lines.

It now operates every passenger and commuter rail line in the state except for Amtrak ; the Port Authority Trans-Hudson ( PATH ), which is owned by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey ; the PATCO Speedline, which is owned by the Delaware River Port Authority ; two SEPTA Regional Rail lines, the West Trenton Line and the Trenton Line ; and a handful of tourist trains in the southern and northwestern parts of New Jersey.

VRE operates on lines owned and maintained by Amtrak, Norfolk Southern and CSX Transportation.

Since 1983 the California Zephyr name has been applied to a Chicago-San Francisco Amtrak service, which operates daily and is a hybrid route between the route of the original CZ and the route of its former rival, the City of San Francisco.

Because it is fully supported by the state, the Capitol Corridor operates under the Amtrak California brand.

But since Amtrak no longer operates the Caltrain service between San Francisco and San Jose, this practice may not be seen again, possibly being replaced by a similar practice on Surfliner trains of using older Amfleet cars.

Amtrak employs more than 20, 000 people.

A more recent event in the area was the October 1995 sabotage of the Amtrak Sunset Limited train.

The Acela Express is one of the few Amtrak lines to operate at a profit ; the two train lines generate more than half of Amtrak's total revenue.

The Los Angeles-to-San Diego portion of the Pacific Surfliner route was once served by the Santa Fe's San Diegan passenger trains ( see " Operations " below ) until Amtrak took over the route in the 1970s keeping the " San Diegan " moniker until the Pacific Surfliner name was bestowed on the route on June 1, 2000, as part of a new marketing campaign ( and short-lived new casual-style uniforms for crew ) reflecting the line's more frequent service north of Los Angeles and new bi-level cars with unique livery manufactured by Alstom that replaced Horizon cars, bi-level California Cars manufactured by Morrison-Knudson, and the Amfleet cars previously assigned to the route.

Amtrak ordered seven more AEM-7s in 1987 ( Order Number: 876006 ), which were completed by 1988.

In an effort to make the City of New Orleans more " fun " – that is, more attractive to potential customers – and to make up for the fact that the once-entertaining dome car's windows were now too dirty to see through, Amtrak employees started holding bingo games in the lounge car.

Amtrak considered more radical changes to the operations of the Lake Shore Limited, including a re-route over the Chicago – Detroit Line, but rejected them.

The social environment on Green Tortoise buses is more communal than other carriers, such as Greyhound or Amtrak.

The Crescent passes through more states ( including the District of Columbia ) than any other Amtrak route.

However, this makes it more costly and time-consuming to maintain, causing Amtrak to install bolt-on nose cones, for easy replacement in the event of a level crossing collision with a vehicle.

There have also been some discussion about Amtrak or the State of Florida using FEC lines for a more direct route between Jacksonville and Miami.

Amtrak has also instituted more regular use of the GE P42-9DC locomotive in Cascades service, including runs with a P42 on each end instead of the normal locomotive / cab car configuration.

Soon the Clockers were primarily used by NJT commuters with only a handful of riders taking the trains to / from Philadelphia ; the Clockers were much faster ( and more comfortable ) than a typical NJT train, but slower and more crowded than a typical Amtrak train causing the former's riders to prefer the trains and the latter's riders to avoid them.

The former is intended for airport and Amtrak customers and is more expensive.

Except at Old Saybrook and New Haven, which were already served by Amtrak, the state constructed new stations-consisting of little more than bare wooden decks-for minimal cost.

A more distinct image for Amtrak California, such as painting locomotives and passenger cars in " California Color ", was established with the arrival of new rolling stock.

Many more Amtrak trains stop at nearby Trenton.

The A line is currently used for Amtrak service ; it provides a more direct route to Florida than the S line, but adds over an hour to the travel time from Richmond to Raleigh, as trains proceed south along the A line to Selma then back northwest along the North Carolina Railroad to Raleigh.

The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner supplements Orange County Line service by providing limited stop service along the corridor and more service during mid-days, nights and weekends.

Throughout the 1990s, WSDOT focused more and more on rail systems and partnered with Amtrak to make a train route that went from Canada to Oregon, which would later become the Amtrak Cascades.
