The RNLAF has a specialized SAR unit, 303 Squadron, which is equipped with Agusta-Bell AB 412s and based at RNLAF Leeuwarden.

To supplement the small availability of tanker aircraft, a RNLAF KDC-10 was also deployed which flew regularly to supply Dutch F-16s with fuel.

Attention was also focused on the Air Force, with the pre-coup strength of 400 personnel and ten Northrop F-5 ' Freedom Fighter ' jet fighters planned to be supplemented with large-scale purchases of Mirage III fighters from France.

The F-5 was so successful that Northrop spent much of the 1970s and 1980s attempting to duplicate its success with similar light-weight designs.

Northrop continued to build much of the F-18 fuselage and other systems after this period, but also returned to the original F-5 design with yet another new engine to produce the F-20 Tigershark as a low-cost aircraft.

LERX were first used on the Northrop F-5 " Freedom fighter " which flew in 1959, and have since become commonplace on many combat aircraft.

The most famous of these is the Northrop F-5 " Freedom Fighter ", which was largely passed over by the USAF, but saw widespread service around the world due to its low cost.

The NATO Light Weight Strike Fighter competition of the early 1950s led to designs such as the French SNCASE Baroudeur, Breguet Taon and Dassault Étendard VI, the Italian Aeritalia G. 91 and Aerfer Ariete ( derived from the Aerfer Sagittario 2 ) and the US Northrop N-156 ( which became the F-5 ).

The jet was operated by the FAB until the mid-1960s, when it was replaced by the F-80C and TF-33A, which were later replaced by the MB-326, Mirage III and Northrop F-5 jets.

On 13 March 2012, a team's Northrop F-5 fighter jet crashed during a training session in Konya Province to the airbase of 3rd Main Jet Base Group Command, where the team is stationed.

While a welcome reinforcement, these types never replaced the older, U. S .- built F-4 Phantoms or F-14 Tomcats ( now the only air arm in the world to continue using the fighter ), or even Northrop F-5 Tiger IIs.

In September 1963, the supersonic-capable Northrop T-38 Talon jet trainer arrived at Moody to replace the first-generation T-33 jet trainers.

That company first built a computer called BINAC ( BINary Automatic Computer ) for Northrop Aviation ( which was little used, or perhaps not at all ).

The 4503rd TFS ( Provisional ) was formed on 29 July 1965 to conduct the evaluation, and their pilots underwent training at Williams AFB while Northrop modified the aircraft for duty in Southeast Asia.

The landing was moved to Northrop Strip ( later renamed White Sands Space Harbor ) at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico.

Touchdown finally took place at 9: 05 am MST, 30 March 1982, at Northrop Strip.
