The spelling and names in both the 1609 – 1610 Douay Old Testament ( and in the 1582 Rheims New Testament ) and the 1749 revision by Bishop Challoner ( the edition currently in print used by many Catholics, and the source of traditional Catholic spellings in English ) and in the Septuagint ( an ancient translation of the Old Testament in to Greek, which is widely used by the Eastern Orthodox instead of the Masoretic text ) differ from those spellings and names used in modern editions which are derived from the Hebrew Masoretic text.

This discovery has shed much light on the differences between the two versions ; while it was previously maintained that the Greek Septuagint ( the version used by the earliest Christians ) was only a poor translation, professor Emanuel Tov, senior editor of the Dead Sea Scrolls ' publication, wrote that the Masoretic edition either represents a substantial rewriting of the original Hebrew, or there had previously been two different versions of the text.

In 1850 appeared his edition of the Codex Amiatinus ( in 1854 corrected ) and of the Septuagint version of the Old Testament ( 7th ed., 1887 ); in 1852, amongst other works, his edition of the Codex Claromontanus.

The shorter form, called Greek I by Robert Hanhart in his edition of the Septuagint, is found in Codex Vaticanus, Alexandrinus, Venetus, and most cursive manuscripts.

For the Apocrypha, the Oxford translating team relied on the Göttingen Septuagint for all of the Apocrypha except 4 Maccabees ( relying there on Rahlf's Septuagint ) and 2 Esdras ( the Ancient Greek of which has not survived ), which used the German Bible Society's 1983 edition Vulgate.

For the Tanakh, or Old Testament, the Massoretic text as published in the latest edition of the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia is used as the base text, in consultation with Biblia Hebraica Leningradensia and other ancient Hebrew texts ( such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Samaritan Pentateuch ) and a select number of ancient versions ( the Septuagint, the Vulgate, the Syriac Peshitta, and the Targums ).

The Septuagint ( Samuel Rengster edition ) has Greek entolas, which, too, may be rendered with precepts.

In the Psalms, they preserved the numbering of the Protestant edition ( which reflects the Hebrew system ), but they placed in brackets the Catholic system of numbering, which is based upon the Greek Septuagint and the Latin Vulgate.

His edition of the Septuagint was based on the Codex Alexandrinus ; it appeared in four volumes ( 1707 – 1720 ), and was completed by Francis Lee and by George Wigan.

The fragments are now being re-published ( with additional materials discovered since Field's edition ) by an international group of Septuagint scholars.

The description almost immediately appears to be describing the persecution of Reformers and Protestant or pre-Protestant groups of people who suffered persecution and execution before, during, and after the Middle Ages, and this view seems to have been held by Bruce R. McConkie in his first edition of Mormon Doctrine.

A second edition of Pope's Shakespeare appeared in 1728, but aside from making some minor revisions to the preface, it seems that Pope had little to do with it.

Newton referred to his plans for a second edition in correspondence with Flamsteed in November 1694: Newton also maintained annotated copies of the first edition specially bound up with interleaves on which he could note his revisions ; two of these copies still survive: but he had not completed the revisions by 1708, and of two would-be editors, Newton had almost severed connections with one, Fatio de Duillier, and the other, David Gregory seems not to have met with Newton's approval and was also terminally ill, dying later in 1708.

It was long supposed that he died in 1639, and this has been thought to be confirmed by the fact that the first edition of his Poems, published in 1640, seems to have a posthumous character.

It seems likely that in 1228 – 1229 he was involved in the Sixth Crusade of the Hohenstaufen emperor Frederick II ; the poems Von Âkers (" from Acre ", see the W. Grimm edition ), which form part of his major work Bescheidenheit, are also from this period.

Even more scathing was Augustus Moore in the May edition of Time: A Monthly Miscellany, who declared: " In Mr haggard's book I find none of the powerful imagination, the elaborate detail, the vivid English which would entitle his work to be described as a romance ... it seems to me to be the method of the modern melodrama ".

") The facsimile edition of the autograph has a different aria for Alidoro, " Fa ' silenzio, odo un rumore "; this seems to have been added by an anonymous hand for a 1818 production.

However, the fifth overall impression, or the first printing of the second edition, seems to be garnering prices as high as the British fourth printing, which was the cheapest and most common of the first edition printings.

Also, thirteen years elapsed between the first printing and the appearance of the second edition ; it seems improbable that Houghton Mifflin would not have reprinted the book ( presuming the arrangements with Allen & Unwin permitted ).

It seems that this distance was first introduced by Hausdorff in his book " Grundzüge der Mengenlehre " the first edition published in 1914.

The first Chinese edition seems to have been written in the late Goryeo Dynasty.

Writer George Bernard Shaw claimed to have read the complete 9th edition — except for the science articles — and Richard Evelyn Byrd took the Britannica as reading material for his five-month stay at the South Pole in 1934, while Philip Beaver read it during a sailing expedition.

Several editors-in-chief of the Britannica are likely to have read their editions completely, such as William Smellie ( 1st edition ), William Robertson Smith ( 9th edition ), and Walter Yust ( 14th edition ).

Nevertheless, from the 9th edition onwards, the Britannica was widely considered to have the greatest authority of any general English language encyclopaedia, especially because of its broad coverage and eminent authors.
