Physical examination of the nervous system is typically normal apart from the presence of papilledema, which is seen on examination of the eye with a small device called an ophthalmoscope or in more detail with a fundus camera.

If there are cranial nerve abnormalities, these may be noticed on eye examination in the form of a squint ( third, fourth, or sixth nerve palsy ) or as facial nerve palsy.

Diabetic retinopathy is detected during an eye examination that includes:

* Ophthalmoscopy or fundus photography: Ophthalmoscopy is an examination of the retina in which the eye care professional: ( 1 ) looks through a slit lamp biomicroscope with a special magnifying lens that provides a narrow view of the retina, or ( 2 ) wearing a headset ( indirect ophthalmoscope ) with a bright light, looks through a special magnifying glass and gains a wide view of the retina.

A slit-lamp examination can reveal dryness on the surface of the eye.

All individuals who would like to wear cosmetic lenses should have a contact lens examination with an eye doctor prior to first use, and if used long-term, regular aftercare examinations, in order to avoid potentially blinding complications.

An eye examination is needed to determine an individual's suitability for contact lenses.

This represents reflection of light from the back of the eye, and is closely related to the term red reflex, used by ophthalmologists and optometrists in describing appearances on fundal examination.

Drugs such as tropicamide are used in medicine to permit examination of the retina and other deep structures of the eye, and also to reduce painful ciliary muscle spasm ( see cycloplegia ).
