** The Anadoluhisarı fortress is built by the Ottomans to defend themselves during the siege.

This came in addition to the building of Anadoluhisarı, the fortress opposite of Rumelihisari on the Asian side, and gave the Ottomans absolute control over the sea traffic of the Bosporus Strait.

Anadoluhisarı ( Anatolian Castle ) is a fortress located in Istanbul, Turkey on the Anatolian ( Asian ) side of the Bosporus, which also gives its name to the quarter around it.

Another fortress, Rumelihisarı, was built between 1451 and 1452 by Sultan Mehmed II opposite of Anadoluhisarı on the European side in order to obtain absolute control over the sea traffic of the Bosporus Strait, which was especially vital for the Genoese in Galata, who were allied with the Byzantines and had colonies in the Black Sea such as Caffa, Sinop and Amasra.

Rumelihisarı is situated at the narrowest point with 660 meters of the Bosphorus strait, just opposite of Anadoluhisarı ( Anatolian Castle ) on the Anatolian side, which is another Ottoman fortress that was built between 1393 and 1394 by Sultan Bayezid I.

The necessity of a fortress opposite of Anadoluhisarı was thus well known to the Ottomans.

Anadoluhisarı ( Turkish for " Fortress of Anatolia "), also called Akçehisar and Güzelcehisar (" beautiful fortress ") in earlier times, was constructed by Sultan Bayezid I in 1394, and initially consisted of just a 25 m high, roughly pentagonal watchtower surrounded by a wall.

Anadoluhisarı was erected as a watch fort.

In fact, as the Ottoman Turks closed in on Constantinople, they constructed a fortification on each side of the strait, Anadoluhisarı ( 1393 ) and Rumelihisarı ( 1451 ).

The twin forts of Anadoluhisarı and Rumelihisarı lie to the north of Constantinople, at the narrowest point of the Bosporus.

Havana was furnished with the fortress of Castillo de los Tres Reyes Magos del Morro to deter potential invaders, which included the English privateer Francis Drake, who sailed within sight of Havana harbour but did not disembark on the island.
