Andorra is formed by seven parishes ( parròquies, singular-parròquia ); Andorra la Vella, Canillo, Encamp, La Massana, Escaldes-Engordany, Ordino, Sant Julia de Loria.

Andorra la Vella (, ) is the capital of the Principality of Andorra, and is located high in the east Pyrenees between France and Spain.

The site of Andorra la Vella ( literally, " Andorra the Old ") has been settled since prior to the Christian era — notably by the Andosin tribe from the late Neolithic.

The settlement of Andorra la Vella has been the principal city of Andorra since 1278 when the French and the Episcopal co-princes agreed to joint suzerainty.

Andorra la Vella's old town — the Barri Antic — includes streets and buildings dating from this time.

Andorra la Vella was, during this period, the capital of a largely isolated and feudal state, which retained its independence due to this principle of co-sovereignty.

Well into the twentieth century, the area around Andorra la Vella remained largely forgotten ; indeed the state was not part of the Treaty of Versailles, simply because it was not noticed.

In 1993, the country's first constitution formalised this parliamentary democracy with executive, legislative, and judicial branches located in Andorra la Vella.

The city also developed its skiing facilities, to the extent that Andorra la Vella was Andorra's applicant city for the XXI Olympic Winter Games, the 2010 Winter Olympics.

However, Andorra la Vella was not selected by the IOC as a candidate city, following the evaluation report of an IOC commission.

Andorra la Vella is located in the south west of Andorra, at, at the confluence of two mountain streams, the Valira del Nord ( Northern Valira ) and the Valira de l ' Orient ( Eastern Valira ), which join to form the Gran Valira.

The parish of Andorra la Vella is divided into the villages of Andorra la Vella itself, La Margineda and Santa Coloma.

As a result of its population size and highly mountainous terrain, Andorra la Vella has no airport of its own, but is three hours ' drive from the nearest airports at Toulouse ( Tolosa ), Girona, Perpignan and Barcelona.

There are also a shuttle bus from Barcelona, Girona and Reus ' airports to Andorra la Vella.

This development, abetted by improvements in transport and communications, has tended to break down Andorra ’ s isolation and to bring Andorrans into the mainstream of European history.

Andorra has reached an agreement with the EU to mint its own coin design, probably from 2013, but subject to ratification by the Andorran Parliament.

Officially the IEC provides standards for the language as a whole: the Philological Section has members from Catalonia proper, Northern Catalonia ( located in France ), the Balearic Islands, Valencia, Alghero in Sardinia and the Principality of Andorra ( the only country where Catalan is the sole official language ).

One remaining, though symbolic, legacy of Andorra's special relationship with France and Spain, is that the Principality has no postal service of its own – French and Spanish postal services operate side by side, although each of them issues separate stamps for Andorra, instead of using their own.

At one time, Andorra shared the country code of France (+ 33 ), and also had a special routing code for calls from Spain, but now has its own country calling code, 376.

Andorra has no railways, although the line connecting Latour-de-Carol and Toulouse, which in turn connects to France's TGVs at Toulouse, runs within of the Andorran border.

Andorra has a network of roads, with a total length of, of which are paved, leaving of unpaved road.

Since the establishment of sovereignty with the ratification of the constitution in 1993, Andorra has moved to become an active member of the international community.

Since 1991, Andorra has had a special agreement with the European Union.

Andorra has had a customs union with the European Union ( EU ) since 1991 though it excludes agricultural produce.
