The thrashing machine, or, in modern spelling, threshing machine ( or simply thresher ), was a machine first invented by Scottish mechanical engineer Andrew Meikle for use in agriculture.

Rennie, a farmer's younger son, was born at Phantassie, near East Linton, East Lothian, Scotland, and showed a taste for mechanics at a very early age, and was allowed to spend much time in the workshop of Andrew Meikle, millwright, the inventor of the threshing machine, who lived at Houston Mill on the Phantassie estate.

Andrew Meikle ( 1719 – 27 November 1811 ) was an early mechanical engineer credited with inventing the threshing machine, a device used to remove the outer husks from grains of wheat.

After his apprenticeship with Andrew Meikle, the inventor of the threshing machine, he became draftsman and personal assistant to James Watt in 1777 at 18.

That same year in San Antonio, Texas, a French immigrant named Andrew Muhl built an ice-making machine to help service the expanding beef industry before moving it to Waco in 1871.

In 1737 Andrew Rodger, a farmer on the estate of Cavers in Roxburghshire, developed a winnowing machine for corn, called a ' Fanner '.
