Pretoria itself was founded in 1855 by Marthinus Pretorius, a leader of the Voortrekkers, who named it after his father Andries Pretorius.

The first president of the South African Republic was Marthinus Wessel Pretorius, elected in 1857, son of the famous Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius, who commanded the Boers to victory at the Battle of Blood River.

These were joined in 1848 by Andries W. J. Pretorius, who became commandant of the Potchefstroom settlers.

The Great Trek consisted of a number of mass movements under a number of different leaders including Louis Tregardt, Hendrik Potgieter, Sarel Cilliers, Pieter Uys, Gerrit Maritz, Piet Retief and Andries Pretorius.

Andries Pretorius filled the leadership vacuum hoping to enter into negotiations for peace if Dingane would restore the land he had granted to Retief.

Pretoria was named after the Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius.

The justness of Sir Harry Smith's measures and his popularity among the Boers gained for his policy considerable support, but the republican party, at whose head was Andries Pretorius, did not submit without a struggle.

Andries Hendrik Potgieter, after the flight of the Ndebele, issued a proclamation in which he declared the country which Mzilikazi had abandoned and forfeited to the emigrant farmers, but also denying land rights to the Sotho-Tswana who had saved him and assisted in the defeat of Mzilikazi and the Ndebele.

The Voortrekkers had a distinctive flag, used mainly by the Voortrekkers who followed Andries Hendrik Potgieter, which is why it was also known as the Potgieter Flag.

Hooft was also the uncle of Cornelis and Andries de Graeff.

A committee of four members – Andries Hessels, greffier ( secretary ) of the States of Brabant ; Jacques Tayaert, pensionary of the city of Ghent ; Jacob Valcke, pensionary of the city of Ter Goes ( now Goes ); and Pieter van Dieven ( also known as Petrus Divaeus ), pensionary of the city of Mechelen – was charged with drafting what was to become the Act of Abjuration.

His father died in 1602, leaving behind three sons, besides Witte also Abraham and Andries, and a daughter Catharina.

Subsequently, Andries van Dam repeated the phrase in a speech at the 1998 Engelbart's Unfinished Revolution Conference, at the opening of Session 3, and the phrase was also cited in John Markoff's 2005 book What the Dormouse Said.

The museum ( also from 1838 ) houses a collection of Voortrekker artifacts and was constructed by Voortrekker leader Andries Pretorius whose waterwheel is one of the exhibits.

With this in mind, the powerful Commissioner General of the Eastern Districts, Andries Stockenstrom, facilitated the creation of the " Kat River " Khoi settlement near the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony.

In the Seventh Frontier War ( 1846 – 1847 ) against the Gcaleka Xhosa, the Khoi gunmen from Kat River distinguished themselves under their leader Andries Botha in the assault on the " Amatola fastnesses ".

The Battle of Blood River (; ) is the name given for the battle fought between 470 Voortrekkers led by Andries Pretorius, and an estimated 10, 000 – 15, 000 Zulu attackers on the bank of the Ncome River on 16 December 1838, in what is today KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

In the sequel to the Battle of Blood River in January 1840, prince Mpande finally defeated Dingane in the Battle of Maqongqe, and was subsequently crowned as new king of the Zulus by his alliance partner Andries Pretorius.

In 1847 after buying land from the Zulu king Mpande, a number of Boers settled in the area and called it the Republic of Klip River with Andries Spies as their commandant.

The Blood River is so named due to the defeat of the Zulu king Dingane, on 16 December 1838, by the Boers under Andries Pretorius, when the river is said to have run red with the blood of the Zulus.

This refers to the Voortrekker leader and town father Andries Potgieter, " chef " being an indication of leader of the emigrants and " stroom " referring to the Mooi River.

He was general of Dingane's forces at the Battle of Blood River ( 16 December 1838 ) with Dambuza Nzobo, a significant defeat for the Zulus as the spears and large numbers of Zulus were unable to breach the Boer laager of Andries Pretorius defended with muskets.

The fort and the village were abandoned in 1785 in favour of Fort Sint Andries, situated more downstream, at the confluence of the Canje River.
