Animalia is an alliterative alphabet book and contains twenty-six illustrations, one for each letter of the alphabet.

An animal is a taxonomic member of the Kingdom Animalia.

The division of the entire Kingdom Animalia into vertebrates ( about 40000 species in part of one phylum ) and invertebrates certainly is convenient in some practical contexts, but to put it into taxonomic perspective, it is roughly on the same scale as dividing the animal kingdom into Gastropoda ( perhaps 60000 species in part of one phylum ) and non-Gastropoda ; worthwhile only in certain constrained contexts.

In referring to taxonomy of the Animalia, " invertebrata " is a term of convenience, not a taxon ; it has very little circumscriptional significance except arguably within the Chordata.

The " classic " six-kingdom system is still recognizably a modification of the original two-kingdom system: Animalia remains ; the original category of plants has been split into Plantae and Fungi ; and single-celled organisms have been introduced and split into Bacteria, Archaea and Protista.

A classification system which places these three groups into different kingdoms ( with multicellular animals forming Animalia, choanoflagellates part of Protista and Fungi a separate kingdom ) is not monophyletic.

Symmetry is important in the taxonomy of animals ; animals with radial symmetry are classified in the taxon Radiata, which is generally accepted to be a clade of the kingdom Animalia.

( Petroica australis ) is situated in the order Passeriformes of the class Aves within the phylum Chordata of the kingdom Animalia.

The genus is therefore incertae sedis within the kingdom Animalia.

The Vertebrata as a subphylum comprises such a small proportion of the Metazoa that to speak of the kingdom Animalia in terms of " Vertebrata " and " Invertebrata " would be about as practical as classifying animals into mayflies and non-mayflies, or transport into rowing boats and non-rowing boats.

In formal taxonomy of the Animalia there are higher level attributes that logically should precede the presence or absence of the vertebral column in constructing a cladogram, for example, the presence of a notochord.

In Linnaeus ' system, these became the kingdoms Vegetabilia ( later Plantae ) and Animalia.

The name Metazoa has also been used to refer to this group, but more often refers to the Animalia as a whole.
