Funakoshi was a student of both Asato Ankō and Itosu Ankō ( who had worked to introduce karate to the Okinawa Prefectural School System in 1902 ).
It was Itosu who first developed the Pinan kata, which were most probably derived from the " Kusanku " form.
Itosu was a linguist and scholar, secretary to the king, so this was a deliberate decision, not an error.
Itosu was born in 1831 and died in 1915.
