His death is unrecorded, but his son Annas the Younger, also known as Ananus ben Ananus was assassinated in 66 AD for advocating peace with Rome.

During the beginning of Jesus's ministry, James did not believe Jesus was the Messiah ; however, there was some great catalyst that changed his mind, for he became the leader of the Nazaraean community in Jerusalem and produced the Epistle of James written before 61 C. E., when he was stoned by the Sanhedrin under the authority of Ananus, the son or grandson of Annas who had been responsible for bringing Jesus to trial ( Josephus, Antiquities 20. 9. 200 )

Theophilus was the son of Annas and the brother of Eleazar, Jonathan, Matthias and Ananus, all of whom served as High Priests.

Luke 3: 2 indicates a joint high priesthood " of Annas and Caiaphas " when the word of God came to John the son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

According to the Gospel of Nicodemus, Joseph testified to the Jewish elders, and specifically to chief priests Caiaphas and Annas that Jesus had risen from the dead and ascended to heaven and he indicated that others were raised from the dead at the resurrection of Christ ( repeating Matt 27: 52 – 53 ).

Annas officially served as High Priest for ten years ( 6 – 15 AD ), when at the age of 36 he was deposed by the procurator Gratus ' for imposing and executing capital sentences which had been forbidden by the imperial government.

The arguments in favour of identification of the Rich Man as the Sadducees are ( 1 ) the wearing of purple and fine linen, priestly dress, ( 2 ) the reference to " five brothers in my father's house " as an allusion to Caiaphas ' father in law Annas, and his five sons who also served as high priests according to Josephus, ( 3 ) Abraham's statement in the parable that they would not believe even if he raised Lazarus, and then the fulfillment that when Jesus did raise Lazarus of Bethany the Sadducees not only did not believe, but attempted to have Lazarus killed again: " So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well " ( John 12: 10 ).

On the historical meaning of the Greek word, in chapter 2 of Acts of Pilate ( roughly dated from 150 to 400 CE ), Annas and Caiaphas define " proselyte " for Pilate:

Following his arrest, Jesus was brought to the house of Annas, the father-in-law of the high priest, Caiaphas.

Perhaps for this reason, Annas was still called " high priest " even after his dismissal, along with Caiaphas ( Luke 3: 2 ).

In support of this is the coincidence that the father and five brothers who will not be convinced even if the parable Lazarus is raised from the dead ( Luke 16: 31 ) predict that Caiaphas, Annas, and the five sons of Annas would not believe and plotted to have the real Lazarus killed when he was raised ( John 12: 10 ).

Caiaphas was the son-in-law of Annas by marriage to his daughter and ruled longer than any high priest in New Testament times.

Although Annas is not mentioned by name in the plot to kill Lazarus, several 19th Century writers such as Johann Nepomuk Sepp and the Abbé Drioux, considered that there may be a concealed reference to Annas in the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus which points at a " Rich man " with five sons.

Exodus 28: 8 ) represents Caiaphas, as figurehead of the Sadducees, then Annas is intended by the " father " in Luke 16: 27, and the " five brothers " Luke 16: 28 are Annas ' five sons.

According to the synoptic gospels, the high priest who examines Jesus is Caiaphas ; in John, Jesus is also interrogated by Annas, Caiaiphas ' father-in-law.

Later, in Acts, Peter and John went before Annas and Caiaphas after having healed a crippled man.

The elders Annas, Caiaphas, Nicodemus, and Joseph himself, along with Gamaliel under whom Paul of Tarsus studied, travelled to Arimathea to interview Simeon's sons Charinus and Lenthius.

Annas appears in the Gospels and Passion plays as a high priest before whom Jesus is brought for judgment, prior to being brought before Pontius Pilate.

The involvement of the family of Annas may be implied in the plot to kill Lazarus of Bethany in John 12: 10.
