Smith said that when this sample was presented by Smith's colleague Martin Harris to Columbia College professor Charles Anthon, a noted classical scholar, that Anthon had attested to the characters ' authenticity in writing but had then ripped up his certification after hearing that the plates had been revealed by an angel.

Anthon wrote, to the contrary, that he had believed from the first that Harris was the victim of fraud.

Charles Anthon ( November 19, 1797, New York City – July 29, 1867 ) was an American classical scholar.

His father, George Christian Anthon, was a German physician who served in the British Army during the American Revolution until the surrender of Detroit in 1788.

The fragment was later known as the Anthon Transcript.

Anthon was also reported to have confirmed the translation of these characters as correct.

Dr. Anthon was a friend and correspondent of Edgar Allan Poe, who attempted to use the acquaintance with him to gain a national reputation in literature and journalism as well as publication in 1845 of Poe's collected stories through Harper and Brothers.

His brother John Anthon was a noted jurist.

His brother Henry Anthon ( 1795-1861 ) was a noted clergyman.

On March 10, 1921, he was set apart as First Counselor in the same presidency to replace President Anthon H. Lund who had died eight days earlier.

However, the work was criticized by his friend Anthon van Rappard soon after it was painted.
