The original Apple Computer, also known retroactively as the Apple I, or Apple-1, is a personal computer released by the Apple Computer Company ( now Apple Inc .) in 1976.

A software-compatible clone of the Apple I ( Replica 1 ), produced using modern components, was released in 2003 at a price of around $ 200.

Applesoft II, which was made available on cassette and disk and in the ROM of the Apple II Plus and subsequent models, was released in 1978.

Originally released for the IBM 6150 RISC workstation, AIX now supports or has supported a wide variety of hardware platforms, including the IBM RS / 6000 series and later IBM POWER and PowerPC-based systems, IBM System i, System / 370 mainframes, PS / 2 personal computers, and the Apple Network Server.

AppleTalk was released for the original Macintosh in 1985, and was the primary protocol used by Apple devices through the 1980s and 90s.

Versions were also released for the IBM PC and compatibles, and the Apple IIGS.

By 1987 Ethernet was clearly winning the standards battle over Token Ring, and in the middle of that year Apple introduced EtherTalk 1. 0 for the newly released Macintosh II computer.

In 1988 Apple had released MacTCP, a system that allowed the Mac to support TCP / IP on machines with suitable Ethernet hardware.

When the Apple II, PET 2001 and TRS-80 were all released in 1977, all three had BASIC as their primary programming language and operating environment.

Ports of the game were released for the Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amiga, Atari ST, MSX, Amstrad CPC, Sharp X68000, PC ( MS-DOS, 1989 and 1996 ), Apple II, FM Towns Marty, Sega Master System, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Nintendo Entertainment System, Famicom Disk System, Sega Game Gear, mobile phone ( Sprint PCS ), Texas Instruments TI-8x series of calculators and UltraCade's Taito Arcade Classics.

Doom became a " killer app " that all capable consoles and operating systems were expected to have, and versions of Doom have subsequently been released for the following systems: DOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Apple Macintosh, Super NES, Sega 32X, Sony PlayStation, Game Boy Advance, iOS, Symbian OS, RISC OS, Atari Jaguar, Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, Tapwave Zodiac, 3DO, Xbox, and Xbox Live Arcade.

In August 1987, Apple Computer released HyperCard for the Macintosh line at the MacWorld convention.

MINIX 1. 5, released in 1991, included support for MicroChannel IBM PS / 2 systems and was also ported to the Motorola 68000 and SPARC architectures, supporting the Atari ST, Commodore Amiga, Apple Macintosh and Sun SPARCstation computer platforms.

The original Macintosh system software was partially based on the Lisa OS, previously released by Apple for the Lisa computer in 1983 and, as part of an agreement allowing Xerox to buy shares in Apple at a favorable rate, it also used concepts from the Xerox PARC Xerox Alto, which Steve Jobs and several other Macintosh team members had previewed.

Multiplan was released first for computers running CP / M ; it was developed using a Microsoft proprietary p-code C compiler as part of a portability strategy that facilitated ports to systems such as MS-DOS, Xenix, Commodore 64, Texas Instruments TI-99 / 4A, Radio Shack TRS-80 Model II, TRS-80 Model 100 ( on ROM ), Apple II, and Burroughs B-20 series.

In April 1996, Apple discontinued the Macintosh LC 580 ( released in 1995 ), the last remaining desktop model of the 68k-based Macintosh line.

In September 1989, Apple Inc. released the Macintosh Portable, the first Macintosh computer intended to be easily portable.

In October 1991 Apple released the first three PowerBooks: the low-end PowerBook 100, the more powerful PowerBook 140, and the high end PowerBook 170, the only one with an active matrix display.

In 1992 Apple released a hybrid portable / desktop computer, the PowerBook Duo, continuing to streamline the subnotebook features introduced with the PowerBook 100.

The PowerBook 500 series was released as Apple was already moving its desktop machines to the PowerPC processor range, and a future upgrade was promised from the start.

In 2010 a new paid version was released for the Apple iPhone and iPad, making use of those devices ' multi-touch capabilities.

Apple has released the source code for a Carbon version of SimpleText in the Panther ( 10. 3 ) Developer Tools.

Mac OS X Panther ( version 10. 3 ) is the fourth major release of Mac OS X, Apple ’ s desktop and server operating system.

Apple advertised that Mac OS X Panther had 150 + new features, including:

* Apple Inc. ( previously Apple Computer ) has named the various major releases of Mac OS X after big cats, such as Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion and the most recent Mountain Lion.

Besides many other additions in the areas of advanced memory and disk management and networking, Novell DOS 7 provided all of Novell's underlying " STDOS " components of the DR DOS " Panther " and " Vladivar " projects except for the graphical " Star Trek " component itself, which had been jointly developed by Apple and Novell.

Apple Symbols is a font introduced in Mac OS X 10. 3 " Panther.

As a result of the five-year agreement between Apple and Microsoft in 1997, it was the default browser on Mac OS and Mac OS X from 1998 until it was replaced by Apple's own Safari web browser in 2003 with the release of Mac OS X 10. 3 Panther.

The Apple I went on sale in July 1976 at a price of, because Wozniak " liked repeating digits " and because they originally sold it to a local shop for $ 500 plus a one-third markup.

Apple solved this problem using an AppleBus-like solution, using a single port on the back of the computer into which the user could plug an adaptor for any given cabling system.

This FriendlyNet system was based on the industry-standard Attachment Unit Interface, but deliberately chose a non-standard connector that was smaller and easier to use, which they called " Apple AUI ", or AAUI.

As the world quickly moved to IP for both LAN and WAN uses, Apple was faced with maintaining two increasingly outdated code bases on an ever-wider group of machines as well as the introduction of the PowerPC based machines.

As Apple abandoned many of these product categories, and all new systems were based on IP, AppleTalk became less and less common.

The second incarnation was a much smaller unit the width of two 5¼ " floppy drives stacked on top of each other, and the third incarnation looked like a flattened Apple with a built-in keyboard.

There were several GUI-based BBSes on the Apple Macintosh platform, including TeleFinder and FirstClass, but these remained widely used only in the Mac market.

Initially designed to run on AT & T Hobbit-based hardware, BeOS was later modified to run on PowerPC-based processors: first Be's own systems, later Apple Inc .' s PowerPC Reference Platform and Common Hardware Reference Platform, with the hope that Apple would purchase or license BeOS as a replacement for its then aging Mac OS.

RMCL ( based on MCL 5. 2 ) runs on Intel-based Apple Macintosh computers using the Rosetta binary translator from Apple.

However, the battle was in vain, as neither platform captured a significant share of the world computer market and only the Apple Macintosh would survive the industry-wide shift to Microsoft Windows running on PC clones.
