The rise of TCP / IP during the 1990s led to a re-implementation of most of these types of support on that protocol, and AppleTalk became unsupported as of the release of Mac OS X v10. 6 in 2009.

Instead of using RS-422's balanced transmit and receive circuits, the AppleTalk Personal Network cabling used a single common electrical ground, which limited speeds to about 500 kbit / s, but allowed one conductor to be removed.

These included updates to EtherTalk and TokenTalk, AppleTalk software and LocalTalk hardware for the IBM PC, EtherTalk for Apple's A / UX operating system allowing it to use LaserPrinters and other network resources, and the Mac X. 25 and MacX products.

The initial default hardware implementation for AppleTalk was a high-speed serial protocol known as LocalTalk that used the Macintosh's built-in RS-422 ports at 230. 4 kbit / s.

Besides AppleTalk and TCP / IP, any Ethernet network could also simultaneously carry other protocols such as DECnet, NetBEUI, and IPX.

As a result, performance on a Mac Plus was generally limited to about 9600 bit / s in RS-232 mode, and could only reliably maintain half of that if AppleTalk was active at the same time.

It is comparable to better-known protocols such as TCP / IP or AppleTalk.

It also presented two practical advantages to the company ; STREAMS ' multiprotocol support would allow them to support both TCP / IP and AppleTalk from a single interface, and a portable cross-platform version of STREAMS was available for purchase commercially, one that included a high-quality TCP implementation.

* File-sharing client — The system can only use TCP / IP, not AppleTalk, to connect to servers sharing the Apple Filing Protocol.

AFP versions 3. 0 and greater rely exclusively on TCP / IP ( port 548 or 427 ) for establishing communication, supporting AppleTalk only as a service discovery protocol.

The AFP 2. x family supports both TCP / IP ( using Data Stream Interface ) and AppleTalk for communication and service discovery.

This was the first version to offer transport connections using TCP / IP as well as AppleTalk.

In its first release the NetBlazer software supported TCP / IP using SLIP, but a later upgrade added Point-to-Point Protocol ( PPP ) and support for IPX and AppleTalk.

Earlier versions of AppleShare supported only the AppleTalk network transport protocol but later versions, sold under the name AppleShare IP, allowed use of the TCP / IP protocol stack, as used on most modern networks.

All versions of Mac OS are capable of acting as a client to an AppleShare server ( via AFP and later SMB ) over AppleTalk and TCP / IP protocols, although more recent versions of OS X have gradually removed support for AppleTalk in favor of the standard TCP / IP.

The Chooser allowed users to connect to AppleShare file servers ( via AppleTalk or TCP / IP ), enable or disable the network access, and select which printer to use.

Remote machines initially had to be connected via AppleTalk, but Mac OS 9 added the option for connections via TCP / IP.

Initially, a printer needed a separate card for each protocol, such as TCP / IP, IPX / SPX, AppleTalk, or DLC / LLC.

With its release, AppleTalk Personal Network was renamed LocalTalk.

Each node dynamically chose its own node number, according to a protocol ( originally the LocalTalk Link Access Protocol LLAP and later the AppleTalk Address Resolution Protocol, AARP ) which handled contention between different nodes accidentally choosing the same number.

Marathon network games can be played over AppleTalk Remote, LocalTalk, TokenTalk, Ethernet, and more recently, a LAN network or the Internet.

Based on the AppleTalk protocol stack, LocalTalk connected the LaserWriter to the Mac over an RS-422 serial port.

The LaserWriter was also the first peripheral to use the LocalTalk connector and Apple ’ s unified round AppleTalk Connector Family, which allowed any variety of mechanical networking systems to be plugged into the ports on the computers or printers.

LocalTalk is a particular implementation of the physical layer of the AppleTalk networking system from Apple Computer.

The IIGS also supported booting from an AppleShare server, via the AppleTalk protocol, over LocalTalk cabling.
