Recently the difference between the Maximalist and Minimalist has reduced, however a new school started with a work, " The Quest for the Historical Israel: Debating Archaeology and the History of Early Israel " by Israel Finkelstein, Amihai Mazar, and Brian B. Schmidt.

The golden bowl was carried off by the Phocians during the Third Sacred War ( 356 – 346 BC ); the stand was removed by the emperor Constantine to Constantinople in 324, where in modern Istanbul it still can be seen in the hippodrome, the Atmeydanı, although in damaged condition: the heads of the serpents have disappeared, however one is now on display at the nearby Istanbul Archaeology Museums.

In their article " Processual Archaeology and the Radical Critique " ( 1987 ), Timothy K. Earle and Robert W. Preucel examined the post-processual movement's " radical critique " of processualism, and whilst accepting that it had some merit and highlighted some important points, they came to the conclusion that on the whole, the post-processual approach was flawed because it failed to produce an explicit methodology.

Archaeology offers both confirmation of parts of the biblical record and also poses challenges to the naive interpretations made by some.

The Pontifical Commission for Sacred Archaeology was created by Pius IX ( 6 January 1852 ) " to take care of the ancient sacred cemeteries, look after their preventive preservation, further explorations, research and study, and also safeguard the oldest mementos of the early Christian centuries, the outstanding monuments and venerable Basilicas in Rome, in the Roman suburbs and soil, and in the other Dioceses in agreement with the respective Ordinaries ".

French social theorist Michel Foucault developed a notion of discourse in his early work, especially the Archaeology of knowledge ( 1972 ).

In 1999, Archaeology Magazine reported that the earliest Egyptian glyphs date back to 3400 BC which "... challenge the commonly held belief that early logographs, pictographic symbols representing a specific place, object, or quantity, first evolved into more complex phonetic symbols in Mesopotamia.
