This, in turn, is part of the Emerald network of Areas of Special Conservation Interest ( ASCIs ) under the Berne Convention.

The protection given to scheduled monuments is given under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979, which is a different law from that used for listed buildings ( which fall within the town and country planning system ).

Wider areas can be protected by designating their locations as Areas of Archaeological Importance ( AAI ) under the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act 1979.

Furthermore, the Natura 2000 network is the EU contribution to the " Emerald network " of Areas of Special Conservation Interest ( ASCIs ) set up under the Bern Convention on the conservation of European wildlife and natural habitats.

Areas often retain the designations they held under pre-reform legislation, though these titles no longer indicate a legal status.
