He was cremated on 18 October 2000, and his ashes were scattered at Lochgilphead in Argyll.

In the west were the Gaelic ( Goidelic )- speaking people of Dál Riata with their royal fortress at Dunadd in Argyll, with close links with the island of Ireland, from which they brought with them the name Scots.

The surviving Central London Railway building to the east of Argyll Street is the best surviving example of the stations designed by Harry Bell Measures, and the Bakerloo line building to the west is a classic Leslie Green structure.

Argyll was born at Ardencaple Castle, Dunbartonshire, the second but only surviving son of John Campbell, 7th Duke of Argyll and his second wife Joan Glassel, the only daughter of John Glassel.

In 1445 James II of Scotland raised Sir Colin's descendant Sir Duncan to the peerage to become Duncan Campbell of Lochow, Lord of Argyll, Knight, 1st Lord Campbell.

Sir Harry's wife died on 31 July 1927 and was buried next to her son's memorial at Glenbranter, Argyll.

This branch of Clan Campbell descends from Sir John Campbell ( died 1546 ), third son of Archibald Campbell, 2nd Earl of Argyll ( whose eldest son Colin was the ancestor of the Dukes of Argyll ; see the latter title for earlier history of the family ).

The member of a junior branch of Clan Campbell, Breadalbane was a descendant of Sir Colin Campbell, 1st of Glenorchy ( d. 1475 ), the son of Duncan Campbell, 1st Lord Campbell by his second wife Margaret Stewart and the half-brother of Archibald Campbell, Master of Campbell, ancestor of the Dukes of Argyll.

Sir Colin Campbell was granted Glenorchy and other lands by his father and built Kilchurn Castle on Loch Awe in Argyll.

His chief works in Westminster Abbey are the monuments of Handel ( 1761 ), Sir Peter Warren, Marshal Wade, the theatrical monument of Lady Elizabeth Nightingale ( 1761 ), his most celebrated work, and the Duke of Argyll ( 1748 ), the last of these being the work which first established Roubiliac's fame as a sculptor.

Sir Edward's intervention resulted in the commission for half the busts in the series for Trinity College, Dublin, and for the Argyll monument commission, if Horace Walpole is to be credited.

In 1678, Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll, son of the Marquess of Argyll, successfully invaded the Clan MacLean lands on the Isle of Mull and Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet fled the castle and withdrew to Cairnbulg Castle, and afterward to Kintail under the protection of the Earl of Seaforth.

In 1691 Duart Castle was surrendered by Sir John Maclean, 4th Baronet to Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll.
