This warm relationship came to an abrupt end in June of 1834 when the National Congress appropriated $3,000 for compiling and printing the laws of Arkansas Territory, and, taking note of the recent wave of corruption in the legislature, left it to the governor to award the contract.

By late 1824, Monroe approved Calhoun's plans and in a special message to the Senate on January 27, 1825, requested the creation of the Arkansas Territory and Indian Territory.

As dictated by southern Congressional members the route ran from St. Louis, Missouri through Arkansas, Oklahoma Indian Territory, Texas, New Mexico Territory, and across the Sonora Desert before ending in San Francisco, California.

In the Treaty of St. Louis ( 1825 ), the Osage were made to " cede and relinquish to the United States, all their right, title, interest, and claim, to lands lying within the State of Missouri and Territory of Arkansas ..." to make room for the Cherokee and the Mashcoux, Muscogee Creeks.

In 1827, Sequoyah had led a delegation of Old Settlers to Washington, D. C. to negotiate for the exchange of Arkansas land for land in Indian Territory.

A master of hit-and-run cavalry tactics, Watie fought those Cherokee loyal to John Ross and Federal troops in Indian Territory and Arkansas, capturing Union supply trains and steamboats, and saving a Confederate army by covering their retreat after the Battle of Pea Ridge in March 1862.

However, during negotiations with the Choctaw in 1820, Andrew Jackson ceded more of Arkansas Territory to the Choctaw than he realized, resulting in a bend in the border between Arkansas and Oklahoma at Ft. Smith, Arkansas.

The General Survey Act of 1824, allowed a survey that established the western border of Arkansas Territory well inside the present state of Oklahoma, where the Choctaw and Cherokee tribes had previously begun to settle.

In a continuation of the new policy, the 1890 Oklahoma organic act extended civil and criminal laws of Arkansas over the Indian Territory, and extended the laws of Nebraska over Oklahoma Territory.

The Oklahoma organic act applied the laws of Nebraska to the incorporated territory of Oklahoma Territory, and the laws of Arkansas to the still unincorporated Indian Territory.

( For years the Federal Court in Ft. Smith, Arkansas had jurisdiction over Indian Territory.

In 1829, Houston resigned as governor and relocated to Arkansas Territory.

In April 1829, in part due to the embarrassment of his well known separation, Houston resigned as governor of Tennessee and went west with the Cherokee to exile in Arkansas Territory.

In 1829, Houston went west and lived again among the Cherokee in the Arkansas Territory, who in October 1829 formally adopted him as a citizen of their nation.

and he wrote also the masterpiece of frontier humor, `` The Big Bear Of Arkansas '', in which earthy realism is placed alongside the exaggeration of the backwoods tall-tale and the awe with which man contemplates the grandeur and the mysteries of nature.

He was the first reporter for the Arkansas supreme court and also wrote a book ( published anonymously ), titled The Arkansas Form Book, which was a guidebook for lawyers.

Early episodes also contained several references to Eureka Springs, which is in northwest Arkansas.

In October 2003, Vicki Hutcheson, who played a part in the arrests of Misskelley, Echols and Baldwin, but did not testify at the trial, gave an interview to the Arkansas Times in which she stated that every word she had given to the police was a fabrication.

The constitution of the state of Arkansas was amended in the general election of 2008 to, among other things, repeal a provision ( Article 3, Section 5 ) which had until its repeal prohibited " idiots or insane persons " from voting.

The maps and journals of the explorers helped to define the boundaries during the negotiations leading to the Adams – Onís Treaty, which set the western boundary as follows: north up the Sabine River from the Gulf of Mexico to its intersection with the 32nd parallel, due north to the Red River, up the Red River to the 100th meridian, north to the Arkansas River, up the Arkansas River to its headwaters, due north to the 42nd parallel and due west to its previous boundary.

Wrestling with evident depression, ( which after his death would be assessed as clinical depression ), Foster was prescribed the anti-depressant medication Trazodone over the phone by his Arkansas doctor, though he was given an insufficient initial dosage to have much effect.

The Arkansas Democratic Party, which then controlled politics in the state, put significant pressure on Faubus after he had indicated he would investigate bringing Arkansas into compliance with the Brown decision.

Local newspapers made a fuss when Gilbert sent to Georgia for marble, but the result, in which a hemispherical dome caps a high drum not unlike that of St. Peter's Basilica, crowning a building housing the bicameral legislature and the state supreme court, was so nobly handsome that West Virginia and Arkansas contracted for Gilbert capitols as well.

He also actively supported the establishment of an architectural program at the University of Arkansas, which was headed by his close friend, John G. Williams.

Of those, one of the most well known was the Texas Brigade, made up of the 1st, 4th, and 5th Texas, and the 3rd Arkansas, which distinguished themselves in numerous battles, perhaps most notably during their fight for the Devil's Den at the Battle of Gettysburg.

The only other instances in which two neighboring counties with the same name share a state border are Sabine County, Texas and Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Bristol County, Massachusetts and Bristol County, Rhode Island, Union County, Arkansas and Union Parish, Louisiana, Teton County, Wyoming and Teton County, Idaho, Big Horn County, Wyoming and Big Horn County, Montana, Park County, Wyoming and Park County, Montana, and Escambia County, Alabama and Escambia County, Florida respectively.

The only other instances in which two neighboring counties with the same name share a state border are Sabine County, Texas and Sabine Parish, Louisiana, Bristol County, Massachusetts and Bristol County, Rhode Island, Kent County, Maryland and Kent County, Delaware, and Union County, Arkansas and Union Parish, Louisiana respectively.

Others who wrote of low characters and low life included Thomas Bangs Thorpe, creator of the Big Bear Of Arkansas and Tom Owen, the Bee-Hunter ; ;

In 2005, other games at Arrowhead included Arkansas State playing host to Missouri, and Kansas hosting Oklahoma.

This territory included what is now Colorado, east of the Front Range of the Rockies and north of the Arkansas River ; Wyoming and Nebraska, south of the North Platte River ; and extreme western Kansas.

In addition to Virginians, it included regiments from all over the Confederacy, even those as far away as Georgia, Texas and Arkansas.

Lieutenant Charles “ Savez ” Read may have been " anchor man " ( graduated last ) in the class of 1860, but his later service to the Confederate States Navy included defending New Orleans, service on CSS Arkansas and CSS Florida, and command of a series of captured Union ships that culminated in seizing the US Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing in Portland, Maine.

Three years later, Lawrence County was established, which included all of southern Missouri west of the St. Francis River and a portion of northern Arkansas.

The county was at first made up of areas that included part of what is now Searcy County, Arkansas, with many opposing splitting the two, which partly fueled the bloody Tutt-Everett War, which began in 1844 and continued into 1850.

Lincoln County is a county located in the U. S. state of Arkansas and is included in the Pine Bluff Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Transportation companies serving the county at the time included the Cotton Belt Route, the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway, Missouri Pacific, the Arkansas River Packet Company, the Wiley Jones Street Car Lines, and the Citizens Street Railway Company.

The county is named for Edward Hempstead, a delegate to the U. S. Congress from the Missouri Territory, which included present-day Arkansas at the time.

Crawford County is included in an area designated for a planned extension of Interstate 49 into Arkansas.

It is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

In 1813 the area was included in a new political subdivision known as Arkansas County which was a political subdivision of the Arkansas District of the Territory of Missouri.

This new county included most of what is now northern Arkansas.
