When " Rock Around the Clock " appeared behind the opening credits of the 1955 film Blackboard Jungle starring Glenn Ford, it soared to the top of the American Billboard chart for eight weeks.

At the same time British audiences were beginning to encounter American rock and roll, initially through films including Blackboard Jungle ( 1955 ) and Rock Around the Clock ( 1955 ).

Both movies contained the Bill Haley & His Comets hit " Rock Around the Clock ", which first entered the British charts in early 1955 – four months before it reached the US pop charts – topped the British charts later that year and again in 1956, and helped identify rock and roll with teenage delinquency.

Around the same time he began to be active in Britain's Free Cinema movement, co-directing the non-fiction short Momma Don't Allow ( also 1955 ) with Karel Reisz.

It was not until 1955, when " Rock Around the Clock " was used under the opening credits of the film Blackboard Jungle, that the song truly took off.

The producers were looking for a song to represent the type of music the youth of 1955 was listening to, and the elder Ford borrowed several records from his son's collection, one of which was Haley's " Rock Around the Clock " and this was the song chosen.

On July 9, 1955, " Rock Around the Clock " became the first rock and roll recording to hit the top of Billboard's Pop charts, a feat it repeated on charts around the world.

In the UK, Haley's " Rock Around the Clock " reached number 17 on the pop charts in January 1955, four months before it first entered the US pop charts.

The most notable of these compilations was the 1955 Decca Records album Rock Around the Clock ( Decca DL 8225 ) which contained most of the tracks Haley recorded as singles for the label in 1954 and 1955.

The ( belated ) success of " Rock Around the Clock " is attributed to its use in the soundtrack of the film Blackboard Jungle, which was released in March 1955.
