The Delos sanctuary was primarily dedicated to Artemis, Apollo's twin sister.

In Greek mythology Artemis was the leader ( ηγεμόνη: hegemone ) of the nymphs, who had similar functions with the Nordic Elves.

Apollo's sister Artemis, who was the Greek goddess of hunting, is identified with Britomartis ( Diktynna ), the Minoan " Mistress of the animals ".

Mythographers agree that Artemis was born first and then assisted with the birth of Apollo, or that Artemis was born one day before Apollo, on the island of Ortygia and that she helped Leto cross the sea to Delos the next day to give birth to Apollo.

This time Apollo was aided by his sister Artemis in protecting their mother.

He fell to the fatal wrath of Artemis, but the surviving details of his transgression vary: " the only certainty is in what Aktaion suffered, his pathos, and what Artemis did: the hunter became the hunted ; he was transformed into a stag, and his raging hounds, struck with a ' wolf's frenzy ' ( Lyssa ), tore him apart as they would a stag.

" In the version that was offered by the Hellenistic poet Callimachus, which has become the standard setting, Artemis was bathing in the woods when the hunter Actaeon stumbled across her, thus seeing her naked.

There are various other versions of his transgression: The Hesiodic Catalogue of Women and pseudo-Apollodoran Bibliotheke state that his offense was that he was a rival of Zeus for Semele, his mother's sister, whereas in Euripides ' Bacchae he has boasted that he is a better hunter than Artemis:

The mortal turned out to be a beautiful young woman, Amethystos, who was on her way to pay tribute to Artemis.

Her life was spared by Artemis, who transformed the maiden into a statue of pure crystalline quartz to protect her from the brutal claws.

In ancient Greece, the amaranth ( also called chrysanthemum and helichrysum ) was sacred to Ephesian Artemis.

In legend, Amarynthus ( a form of Amarantus ) was a hunter of Artemis and king of Euboea ; in a village of Amarynthus, of which he was the eponymous hero, there was a famous temple of Artemis Amarynthia or Amarysia ( Strabo x.

Preparing to depart from Aulis, which was a port in Boeotia, Agamemnon's army incurred the wrath of the goddess Artemis.

There are several reasons throughout myth for such wrath: in Aeschylus ' play Agamemnon, Artemis is angry for the young men who will die at Troy, whereas in Sophocles ' Electra, Agamemnon has slain an animal sacred to Artemis, and subsequently boasted that he was Artemis ' equal in hunting.

Also during Summer of 2009 archaeologists discovered in Actium the ruins of the Temple of Apollo ( in Greek Ναός του Ακτίου Απόλλωνος ) and found two statues ' heads, one of Apollo, one of Artemis ( Diana ).

Apollo and Artemis used poisoned arrows to kill them, though according to some versions two of the Niobids were spared, one boy and one girl.

When she bore twin sons, she ate one of them while the other one, Iakhos, was saved by Artemis.

Pre-pubescent and adolescent Athenian girls were sent to the sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron to serve the Goddess for one year.

It represents Artemis with the bow at one extremity, Luna-Selene with flowers at the other and a central deity not immediately identifiable, all united by a horizontal bar.

In the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys series, the contest is altered somewhat with Aphrodite and Athena entering but Artemis is the third goddess contestant instead of Hera ( offering the one who chooses her the chance to be renowned as a great warrior ).

This is her one active mythic role: once Apollo and Artemis are grown, Leto withdraws, to remain a dim and benevolent matronly figure upon Olympus, her part already played.

The cult in the Temple of Artemis ( Diana ) at Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World possibly originated with the observation of a meteorite fall which was understood by contemporaries to have fallen to the earth from Zeus, the principal Greek deity.

They sought to surpass two famous contemporary temples, the Heraion of Samos and the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

She is ambivalent, variously asking Artemis to kill her and, apparently, considering marrying one of the suitors.

The giant brothers Otus and Ephialtes figure in at least two Naxos myths: in one, Artemis bought the abandonment of a siege they laid against the gods, by offering to live on Naxos as Otus's lover ; in another, the brothers had actually settled Naxos.

However, the name Artemis ( variants Arktemis, Arktemisa ) is most likely related to Greek árktos ‘ bear ’ ( from PIE * h₂ŕ ̥ tḱos ), supported by the bear cult that the goddess had in Attica ( Brauronia ) and the Neolithic remains at the Arkouditessa, as well as the story about Callisto, which was originally about Artemis ( Arcadian epithet kallisto ).

The name Kalliste ( Καλλίστη ), " most beautiful ", may be recognized as an epithet of the goddess herself, though none of the inscriptions at Athens that record priests of Artemis Kalliste ( Άρτεμις Καλλίστη ), date before the third century BCE.

Strabo's version looks to be the most authoritative as he had access to first hand primary sources on the sanctuaries of Artemis, i. e. the priest of Artemis Artemidoros of Ephesus.

The most famous example of this is the putative division of all the aspects of the so-called Great Goddess into a number of goddesses with more specialized functions — Gaea, Demeter, Persephone, Artemis and Hecate among them.

The most important deities were: Zeus, the supreme god and ruler of the sky ; Hera, his wife and goddess of marriage ; Athena, goddess of wisdom ; Poseidon, god of the sea ; Demeter, goddess of the earth ; Apollo, god of the sun, law, reason, music and poetry ; Artemis, goddess of the moon, the hunt and the wilderness ; Aphrodite, goddess of love ; Ares, God of war ; Hermes, god of commerce and medicine, and Hephaestus, god of fire and metalwork.

In 2007, a Roman art | Roman-era bronze sculpture of " Artemis and the Stag " was sold at Sotheby's in New York for United States dollar | US $ 28. 6 million, by far exceeding its estimates and at the time setting the new record as List of most expensive sculptures | the most expensive sculpture as well as work from antiquity ever sold at auction.

However, most tributes to Artemis inspired by her sacrifice, were more traditional.

They were normally considered to be very shy creatures, except around the goddess Artemis, who was known to be a friend to most nymphs.

A prophet named Calchas told him that in order to appease Artemis, Agamemnon would have to sacrifice the most precious thing that had come to his possession in the year he killed the sacred deer.

One year the king forgot to include Great " Artemis of the Golden Throne " in his offerings Insulted, Artemis, the " Lady of the Bow ", loosed the biggest, most ferocious boar imaginable on the countryside of Calydon.

Herodotus also relates that of the many solemn festivals held in Egypt, the most important and most popular one was that celebrated in Bubastis in honour of the goddess, whom he calls Bubastis and equates with the Greek goddess Artemis.

Often the epithet is the result of fusion of the Olympian divinity with an older one: Poseidon Erechtheus, Artemis Orthia, reflect intercultural equations of a divinity with an older one, that is generally considered its pendant ; thus most Roman gods and goddesses, especially the Twelve Olympians, had traditional counterparts in Greek, Etruscan, and most other Mediterranean pantheons, e. g. Jupiter as head of the Olympian Gods with Zeus, but in specific cult places there may even be a different equation, based on one specific aspect of the divinity.

At the same time, the Romans removed most of the art and treasures of the city to Patras, including the gold and ivory cultic statue of Artemis.

" It has also been hypothesized by Jarlaxle Baenre, who knows Artemis very well, that somebody close to him, most likely a " parent or a close family friend " ( possibly a priest, and definitely a traveling merchant who helped him get to Calimshan ), betrayed him when he was less than nine years of age.

Artemis is also a consummate warrior, combining his ambidexterity, thieving training, and warrior's weapon skills to be one of the most dangerous swordsmen in the Realms.
