Formerly considered part of Tracheata, velvet worms are now considered close relatives of the Arthropoda and Tardigrada, with which they form the taxon Panarthropoda.

In Arthropoda the hardening that produces sclerites is accomplished either by the cross-linking of protein chains in the exocuticle, a process called sclerotization, or by incorporation of minerals such as calcium carbonate into regions of the exoskeleton, or both.

The usage is not homologous with that of vertebrate anatomy ; the term " femur " simply has been adopted by analogy and refers, where applicable, to the most proximal of ( usually ) the two longest jointed segments of the legs of the Arthropoda.

Amblypygi is an order of invertebrate animals belonging to the class Arachnida, in the subphylum Chelicerata of the phylum Arthropoda.
