* 1864 – American Civil War: Franklin-Nashville Campaign – Battle of Nashville – Major General George H. Thomas's Union forces defeat Lieutenant General John Bell Hood's Confederate Army of Tennessee.

In 1864 Union Naval Lieutenant Cushing fitted a steam launch with a spar torpedo to attack the Confederate ironclad CSS Albermarle.

Lieutenant Charles “ Savez ” Read may have been " anchor man " ( graduated last ) in the class of 1860, but his later service to the Confederate States Navy included defending New Orleans, service on CSS Arkansas and CSS Florida, and command of a series of captured Union ships that culminated in seizing the US Revenue Cutter Caleb Cushing in Portland, Maine.

On May 10, 1863, Confederate Lieutenant General Thomas " Stonewall " Jackson died of complications from pneumonia at the Chandler plantation in Guinea Station ( also known as Guiney's Station ), in the unincorporated Caroline County community of Woodford.

* J. J. McAlester ( 1842 – 1920 ), U. S. Marshal for Indian Territory ( 1893 – 1897 ), Confederate Army captain, merchant in and founder of McAlester, Oklahoma as well as the developer of the coal mining industry in eastern Oklahoma, one of three members of the first Oklahoma Corporation Commission ( 1907 – 1911 ) and the second Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma ( 1911 – 1915 ).

In 1861, Dahlgren's commander at the Navy Yard resigned to join the Confederate navy, and President Abraham Lincoln wanted to name Lieutenant Dahlgren to the post of Commander of the Washington Navy Yard.

In the week before the Battle of Gettysburg, Confederate Major General Jubal Early's division of Lieutenant General Richard S. Ewell's corps of the Army of Northern Virginia passed through the community on its way northward.

In areas more distant from the main theaters of operations, Confederate forces in Alabama and Mississippi under Lieutenant General Richard Taylor, in Arkansas under Brigadier General M. Jeff Thompson, in Louisiana and Texas under General E. Kirby Smith and in Indian Territory under Brigadier General Stand Watie surrendered on May 4, 1865, May 12, 1865, May 26, 1865 ( officially June 2, 1865 ) and June 28, 1865, respectively.

During the American Civil War, Hughes was voted Captain of the 23rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

At the outbreak of the American Civil War, Berry joined the Confederate Army and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant with the 16th Arkansas Infantry Regiment.
