After winning three more fights, Robinson faced Jake LaMotta, who would become one of his more prominent rivals, for the first time in October.

Robinson built a record of 40 – 0 before losing for the first time to LaMotta in a 10 round re-match.

Robinson outboxed LaMotta for the first 10 rounds, then unleashed a series of savage combinations on LaMotta for three rounds, finally stopping the champion for the first time in their legendary six-bout series — and dealing LaMotta his first legitimate knockout loss in 95 professional bouts.

LaMotta went 14-0-1 ( 3 KOs ) as a middleweight in his first fifteen bouts before losing a highly controversial split decision to Jimmy Reeves in Reeves ' hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.

LaMotta knocked Robinson down in the first round of the fight.

LaMotta won via unanimous decision, giving Robinson the first defeat of his career.

LaMotta won the first round ( also knocking Cerdan down ), Cerdan the second and the third was even.

LaMotta made his first title defense against Tiberio Mitri on July 7, 1950 at Madison Square Garden, New York.

When LaMotta returned, he knocked out his first two opponents, Johnny Pretzie ( TKO 4 ) and Al McCoy ( KO 1 ), but a split decision loss afterwards to Billy Kilgore convinced him to finally retire.

LaMotta was one of the first boxers to adopt the " bully " style of fighting, in that he always stayed close and in punching range of his opponent, by stalking him around the ring, and sacrificed taking punches himself in order to land his own shots.

For his first defense Cerdan returned to the United States, where he fought Jake LaMotta in Detroit.

Her first film credit was Martin Scorsese's Raging Bull in 1980, as Vikki LaMotta, the wife of Robert De Niro's lead character.

LaMotta, who had a weight advantage over Robinson, knocked Robinson out of the ring in the eighth round, and won the fight by decision.

Besides the loss in the LaMotta rematch, the only other mark on Robinson's record during this period was a 10 round draw against Jose Basora in 1945.

In the sixth round, LaMotta floored Reeves, who was only down for a second.

LaMotta damaged his left hand in the fifth round, but still landed 104 punches in the ninth round, whereas Cerdan hardly threw a punch.

The official score had LaMotta as winner by a knockout in 10 rounds because the bell had already rung to begin that round when Cerdan announced he was quitting.

By the fifteenth round, Dauthuille was once again ahead on all scorecards ( 72-68, 74-66, 71-69 ) and seemed to be about to repeat a victory against LaMotta.

Shockingly, LaMotta hit Dauthuille with a barrage of punches that sent him down against the ropes toward the end of the round.

Robinson won by a technical knockout in the 13th round, when the fight was stopped with LaMotta lying on the ropes.

LaMotta was knocked down for the only time in his career by a right hand in the seventh round.

* February 28-Gus Lesvenich retains his world Light-Heavyweight title with a tenth round knockout over Billy Fox ( the guy against whom Jake LaMotta later alleged to have thrown a fight ), in New York.

The match stopped when LaMotta could not answer the bell for the eighth round.

On 12 July 1950, Mitri unsuccessfully challenged world middleweight champion Jake LaMotta, losing a 15 round decision.

LaMotta landed a right to Robinson's head and a left to his body, sending him through the ropes.

In the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, his sixth bout with Robinson, LaMotta suffered numerous severe blows to the head.

" I fought Sugar Ray so often, I almost got diabetes ," LaMotta later said.

* October 27-Marcel Cerdan dies when his plane, an Air France Constellation, crashes over the Azores when he was returning to the United States for a rematch with Jake LaMotta.

On February 14, 1951, Robinson and LaMotta met for the sixth time.

LaMotta had lost by knockout to Billy Fox earlier in his career.

However, that fight was later ruled to have been fixed and LaMotta was sanctioned for letting Fox win.

Robinson won five of his six bouts with LaMotta.
