As it passes by JFK International Airport, the Belt Parkway interchanges with NY 878 ( the Nassau Expressway ), Interstate 678 ( I-678, named the Van Wyck Expressway ), and going eastbound, also the JFK Expressway as well as Lefferts Boulevard, at exit 19 ( westbound Lefferts Boulevard is exit 18B, the Nassau Expressway and the Van Wyck is exit 19, and the JFK Expressway is exit 20 ).

The first of I-890 passes through mostly undeveloped, wooded areas, a trend that finally ends as the highway curves east to meet the north end of NY 337 at exit 2 near the Rotterdam Square shopping mall.

From here, the freeway passes under NY 146 before curving to the south and exiting the city limits.

West of Salina, the Thruway passes north of Liverpool and Onondaga Lake before intersecting I-690 and its northern continuation, NY 690, at exit 39 in Van Buren.

Now in Cayuga County, the highway serves Weedsport via exit 40 and NY 34 and passes north of Port Byron prior to entering Seneca County and the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

At exit 52, it passes to the west of the Walden Galleria, a shopping mall situated at the nearby junction of Walden Avenue and NY 277.
