The fountain is a campus landmark and was featured prominently in the 1984 film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.

Star Trek is an American science fiction television series created by Gene Roddenberry that follows the adventures of the starship and its crew, led by Captain James T. Kirk ( William Shatner ), first officer Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), and chief medical officer Dr. Leonard McCoy ( DeForest Kelley ), in the 23rd century.

Like Enterprise, the new film ( which did contain an indirect reference to the series: Scotty believes he has been " exiled " to the remote Starfleet outpost, where Kirk and the older Spock encounter him, as punishment for losing Admiral Archer's beagle-whom Kirk is quite familiar with-in a transporter mishap ) also adopted a prequel concept, with a different approach.

* " Yesteryear " is a time-travel episode in which Mr. Spock uses " The Guardian of Forever ", a time gateway from the original series episode " The City on the Edge of Forever ", to travel to his own childhood past.

One element from Yesteryear that has become canon by depiction within Star Trek: The Original Series is the Vulcan city of ShiKahr, depicted in a background scene wherein Kirk, Spock and McCoy walk across a natural stone bridge ( first depicted in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ) in the remastered " Amok Time ".

Star Trek ( 2009 ) also references " Yesteryear ", featuring a nearly identical scene in which a young Spock is confronted by several other Vulcan children, who bully and provoke him for being part human.

The passionate, sometimes cantankerous McCoy frequently argues with Kirk's other confidant, science officer Spock, and occasionally is bigoted toward Spock's Vulcan heritage.

McCoy is someone to whom Kirk unburdens himself and is a foil to Spock.

Twenty times on the original Star Trek, McCoy declares someone or something deceased with the line, " He's dead ", " He's dead, Jim ", or something similar ; the phrase is considered a catchphrase of the character, although actor Kelley disliked repeating such lines, and refused to say it on The Wrath of Khan when Spock is near death ; James Doohan as Montgomery Scott says " He's dead already " instead.

Geordi ultimately designs the " Jellyfish ", the advanced spacecraft that is piloted by Ambassador Spock in the film.

While Spock makes it clear that the events during the period of Surak are well documented (" The Savage Curtain "), he is completely uncertain in regard to the origin of the Romulans: " If the Romulans are an offshoot of my Vulcan blood -- and I think this likely -- then attack becomes even more imperative.

In the film Star Trek III: The Search for Spock the Federation starship sent to survey the newly formed Genesis Planet is named USS Grissom.

In the same movie, Mr Spock is beamed in a cloaked ship while walking.

In " The Return of the Archons " and " The Apple " reference to the " Prime Directive of non-interference " is made by Spock.

Spock, who notes that " commanding a starship is first, best destiny ", dies at the end of Star Trek II.

In Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Kirk leads his surviving officers in a successful mission to rescue Spock from a planet on which he is reborn.

Data is in many ways a successor to the original Star Treks Spock ( Leonard Nimoy ), in that the character offers an " outsider's " perspective on humanity.

In addition, their hearts are located on the right side of the torso, in between the ribs and pelvis, as Dr. McCoy once says about Spock: “ He is lucky that his heart is where his liver should be, or he ’ d be dead !” ( ST: TOS, A Private Little War )

In the Star Trek original series ( TOS ) episode " All Our Yesterdays ", Spock willingly consumes meat ; partly due to the effects of time-travel 5, 000 years into the past, and partly because he reasons there is no other suitable food available given the harsh, ice-age climate in which they are trapped.

In " non-canon " Trek-related literature, such as the novelization of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Vulcans are depicted as immune to the effects of alcohol ( though in the TOS episode " The Naked Time " a strange affliction infects the crew, that has much the same effect as alcohol, and Spock is also affected and becomes emotional, and even starts to cry ).

During the October event, many people including Dr. Benjamin Spock climbed the fence surrounding the depot and were detained.

Science Officer Spock informs Kirk that the gravity pull of the planet fluctuated to zero and describes that the surrounding space seemed to momentarily " wink " out of existence.

The Tholians claim this particular area of space and attempt to ensnare the Enterprise in their energy web, but the Enterprise, under the command of Spock, is able to escape and retrieve Kirk from between dimensions.

Spock, meanwhile, manages to locate the landing party in a minute zone of breathable atmosphere, and beams everyone, except Trelane, back to the ship by locking onto every detectable lifeform in the area.

Nomad is then escorted to a holding area where Spock attempts to study it further, Nomad noting that Spock is the only " well-organized " living being on the Enterprise.

After the message is heard, Spock orders the Enterprise to leave the area.

The 1982 science fiction film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan used " Amazing Grace " amid a context of Christian symbolism, to memorialize the death of Mr. Spock but more practically, because the song has become " instantly recognizable to many in the audience as music that sounds appropriate for a funeral " according to a Star Trek scholar.

A popular t-shirt and bumper sticker slogan for Trekkies, seen as early as 1967, was I grok Spock ( often showing the Star Trek character using the Vulcan salute ).

For Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( 1984 ) director Leonard Nimoy and writer-producer Harve Bennett wanted the Klingons to speak a proper language instead of made-up gibberish and so commissioned Okrand to develop the phrases Doohan had come up with into a full language.

Star Trek: The Next Generation 2. 0 featured The Next Generation trivia along with 32 ( up from 24 ) new stocks for the Spock Market game.

Their lines, as Spock and McCoy, were modified for Doohan and Koenig.

An early Filmation proposal for this series had children assigned to each of the senior officers as cadets, including a young Vulcan for Mr. Spock.

This causes mental anguish for McCoy, who in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( 1984 ) helps restore Spock's katra to his reanimated body.

Circa stardate 44995. 3 ( December 28, 2367 ), the Vulcan Ambassador Spock was discovered on Romulus, working with an underground movement for the reunification of the divided races.

Having undergone an extensive rebuilding and refitting, the Enterprise then appears in Star Trek: The Motion Picture ( 1979 ) and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan ( 1982 ), before being destroyed in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock ( 1984 ).

* December 5 – In New York City, Benjamin Spock and Allen Ginsberg are arrested for protesting against the Vietnam War.

The 2009 film Star Trek introduces an alternate timeline that reveals different origins for Kirk, the formation of his association with Spock, and how they came to serve together on the Enterprise.

Changing the character to be " a man with very human emotions " also allowed for the development of the Spock character.

In a later TOS episode " Requiem for Methuselah ", Spock specifically requests a Terran brandy after Dr. McCoy, while serving himself and Captain Kirk, observes that he had no expectation that Spock would be joining them in a drink for fear that the alcohol would affect his logic faculties.

In the TOS episode " This Side of Paradise ", Leila Kalomi hints at having had a special relationship with Spock some six years earlier, though Spock's remark that he hoped his half-human blood would see him " spared " the agony of pon farr in the episode Amok Time suggests that their relationship was more casual.

They encounter another colonist, Leila Kalomi, who fell in love with Spock six years earlier back on Earth.

Being half-Vulcan, Spock doesn't normally express his emotions, but moments after exposure to these spores, the formerly logical Spock is able to say to Leila, " I love you.

" Now free to find bliss with Leila, Spock laughs and with his head in Leila's lap he lolls under a tree with her as they contemplate the clouds.

When Kirk attempts to contact him, it is not Spock but Leila who opens the communicator.

Unwilling for a moment to stop embracing, nuzzling, and kissing Leila, Spock answers Kirk's questions with amused curtness and refuses to obey orders.

Nonetheless, when Spock arrives, Kirk insults him with a stream of racist abuse and taunts him as a freak who dares to make love to Leila.

In the midst of this work, Leila asks to see Spock.
