Alfred William Lawson ( March 24, 1869 – November 29, 1954 ) was a professional baseball player, manager and league promoter from 1887 through 1916 and went on to play a pioneering role in the US aircraft industry, publishing two early aviation trade journals.

His early major works for the voice included The Masque at Kenilworth ( 1864 ); an oratorio, The Prodigal Son ( 1869 ); and a dramatic cantata, On Shore and Sea ( 1871 ).

This early practice lead to Iowa State Agricultural College and Model Farm opening its doors to Iowa students for free in 1869 under the Morrill Act ( or Land-grant Act ) of 1862.

A fire destroyed the courthouse ( designed by Thomas Jefferson ) in 1869 and most of the early records of this county were lost.
