It is famous for its exceptional population of lions, leopards and cheetahs, game, and the annual migration of zebra, Thomson's gazelle, and wildebeest to and fro the Serengeti every year from July to October, known as the Great Migration.

Each year around the same time the great wildebeest migration begins in the Ngorongoro area of the southern Serengeti of Tanzania.

Tanzania has considerable wildlife habitat, including much of the Serengeti plain, where the white-bearded wildebeest ( Connochaetes taurinus mearnsi ) and other bovids participate in a large-scale annual migration.

In the early 1970s, Fletcher returned to Kenya's Serengeti Plain, and Great Rift Valley for a year, an experience he recounted in The Winds of Mara, published in 1973.

The Mara River is a river in Africa, flowing through Kenya and Tanzania, and lies across the migration path of ungulates in the Serengeti / Masai Mara game reserves.
