Approximately two years after the onset of puberty ( a girl ’ s first menstrual cycle ), the hormone estrogen stimulates the development and growth of the glandular, fat, and suspensory tissues that compose the breast.

In the onset of puberty, although their DHT levels remain very low, their testosterone levels elevate normally.

If the problem is chronic, symptoms consist of fatigue, weight loss, failure to thrive ( in children ), delayed puberty ( in adolescents ), hypoglycemia ( low blood sugar levels ), anemia and hyponatremia ( low sodium levels ).

As sex steroid levels rise during puberty, bone maturation accelerates.

An advanced bone age is common when a child has had prolonged elevation of sex steroid levels, as in precocious puberty or congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
