* In the Judge Dredd comic stories, originally published in 2000 AD, the megalopolis of Mega-City One consists of many hundreds, if not thousands, of City Blocks, in which a citizen can be born, grow, live, and die without ever leaving.

He took over the development of Judge Dredd when creator John Wagner temporarily walked out, and wrote many of the early stories, establishing the character and his world, before Wagner returned.

Most notable are the many stories that occur in the Judge Dredd universe and the early stories of Pat Mills, which are frequently interlinked and also link into the Dredd universe.

The abbreviated derogatory term Futzies was applied to citizens in 2000 AD stories ( mainly in the Judge Dredd universe ) who had been driven insane by Future Shock.

The Undercity is inhabited by various mutants and criminals ( or perps as they are known in the comic ), and has featured in several Judge Dredd stories.

Ennis's most notable Dredd stories include Muzak Killer ( a pastiche of mainstream pop music ), Emerald Isle ( a tongue-in-cheek story set in Ennis's native Ireland ), and the twenty-part epic Judgment Day.

Although in the original story Rico was depicted wearing a judge's badge with the name " Dredd " ( see image, left ), some artists in later stories have erroneously drawn him with a badge labelled " Rico " as though it were his surname.

Following Judge Dredd's resignation and his replacement by the ex-Judge Kraken ( recounted in the Judge Dredd stories Tale of the Dead Man and Countdown to Necropolis respectively ), the sisters of Death-Phobia and Nausea-used their powers to influence Kraken and rescue the Dark Judges from Limbo.

After years of appearing in Judge Dredd stories, he later got his own series in the Judge Dredd Megazine and in 2000 AD.

These consisted of sixteen Judge Dredd stories with two additional plays featuring characters from the Strontium Dog strip.

Judge Cassandra Anderson is a fictional character that started as a supporting player in the comic story Judge Dredd of 2000 AD and eventually rose in prominence and became the star of her own series, which is entitled Anderson: Psi-Division.

Dredd has had a similar experience and they can somewhat relate to each other.

Rico Dredd ( 2066 – 2099 ) was the " clone brother " of Joseph Dredd, which is to say that they were both cloned from the same genetic source, in their case Chief Judge Fargo.

He and his cohorts struck several times, causing great carnage each time, but they were always defeated by the Judges Dredd and Anderson.

When Dredd and Fergee are captured by the Angel Gang they are introduced to Mean, who Pa Angel says " We had to make some alterations when he was a child.

" From that point on ," writes Bolland, " either he or his successor Steve MacManus called me direct whenever they wanted me to do a Dredd story.

Later, Landau's Titan " decided they could repackage the Judge Dredd stories in an American comic format with new covers and sell it to America ," and did under the evocative British brand " Eagle Comics ".

In 2000 AD Prog 958's Dredd story " Awakening Of Angels ", John Wagner ' resurrected ' Pa and Junior Angel by revealing that when Dredd threw them into the volcano they never actually died, but were instead trapped in a crystal-like substance which held them in suspended animation.

In 2007 they appeared in two consecutive stories in Judge Dredd Megazine, focusing on the clan's earlier adventures: Before They Wuz Dead ( an Angel Gang story ) and Pizen Impossible ( a Fink solo story ), both by Simon Spurrier and Steve Roberts.

Dredd refers to them as the " legendary Angel family " and explains that they are " Cursed Earth pirates, murderers, scavengers, and, of course, scumbags ".

Dredd encounters them when his shuttle is downed by them and they capture him, but he quickly frees himself and kills them all in combat.

Influenced by the movie Mad Max and the popular Judge Dredd comics, they specialised in organising illegal parties in London throughout the 1980s, driven at first by eclectic assortments of fringe music such as psychedelic rock and dub reggae, but then embracing the burgeoning acid house music movement by the late 1980s.

In March 2012 IDW announded that they would be releasing new comics based on Judge Dredd and The Crow.

In many strips, they would often just be antagonistic: in " The Interrogation ", Dredd was abducted by SJS men under Judge Spiegl and viciously interrogated on spurious grounds ; Dredd believed SJS had turned corrupt again and that the body may be planning a coup, though it turned out to be a routine Random Physical Abuse Test of him instead ( he passed ).

Rico orders his clones activated prematurely, but they are incomplete and unable to stop Dredd.

Their first meeting was during a triad mission, making him an enemy of Dredd ; in the second, they were forced to be allies as part of a joint Mega-City One / Sino-Cit operation in Hong Tong.

Both titles were relaunched as Classic 2000AD and Classic Judge Dredd in the mid-1990s but were cancelled soon after.

There were also annuals / yearbooks dedicated to 2000 AD characters such as Dan Dare ( 1978 – 1979, cover dated 1979 – 1980 ), Judge Dredd ( 1980 – 1994 ) and Rogue Trooper ( 1990 ).

There were five Judge Dredd poster magazines, plus one each for four other 2000 AD series: Nemesis the Warlock, Strontium Dogs, Sláine and Rogue Trooper.

John Wagner created both Judge Death and Judge Anderson for the Judge Dredd story " Judge Death ," the latter helping introduce the Psi-Judges, which were seen as a natural progression.

Despite critical acclaim, the sales of the first Strontium Dog release, Down to Earth, were disappointing and Big Finish focused almost exclusively on the better-selling Judge Dredd series.

A series of four talking books, entitled Judge Dredd: The Crime Chronicles, were released in 2009, with Longworth again performing Dredd.

It was based on a series of concept cars of the early 1980s, that were seen in films like Judge Dredd, Back to the Future Part II, and Total Recall.

Around this time, Titan Books were " trying to launch a line of comics all written by Alan Moore ," and " talks were underway to do a Batman Meets Judge Dredd one-off by Alan and me.

In the story Psycho Block which appeared in the Judge Dredd Megazine readers were informed that Mega City One has several facilities called Psycho Blocks which house those who are totally immoral and insane.

In the 2012 movie Dredd, a revised version of the Lawgiver II demonstrated seven types of ammunition, which again were voice activated: RAPID ( Rapid fire FMJ ( Full Metal Jacket ), AP ( Armour Piercing ), INC ( Incendiary ), HI-EX ( High Explosive ) Hotshot, and Stun.

Thirty-one 101s were converted by Land Rover with artistically styled bodyshells for the 1995 Sylvester Stallone film Judge Dredd.

The SJS Judges of Sector 301 were also hideously corrupt, causing Dredd to set up an internal investigation outside of SJS control, consisting entirely of street judges led by Judge DeMarco and then by Judge Buell.

Years later, an RPA would go wrong and two SJS Judges were killed, and Spiegl and Dredd came to blows over it.

Red Rocks ( which later became Club Dredd ), together with Mayric's ( now Sazi's ) and Kampo ( Yosh in the mid ' 90s ), were the only venues where unsigned bands were allowed to play their own songs.
