He was senior officer at Mauritius in 1821, with orders to suppress the slave trade, and concluded the Moresby Treaty with Seyyid Said, the imam of Muscat in September 1822 restricting the scope of local slave trading and conferring on English warships the right of searching and seizing local vessels.

* On August 11, 2009, Airlines PNG Flight 4684 crashed whilst en route from Port Moresby to Kokoda in Papua New Guinea, killing all 13 on board.

The island was discovered by Captain John Moresby whilst commanding HMS Basilisk in 1873.

During its history the PNGDF has sent 400 troops to assist the Vanuatu government put down a secessionist revolt in 1980 and was called out in aid to the civil power in Port Moresby in 1983.

During this period Port Moresby, especially its " villages ", fell into disrepair as the Fifth Air Force under General George Kenney " pushed his bomber line forward 1800 miles " rapidly establishing no less than five air bases around the sparsely populated town, and troops from a variety of nations under MacArthurs ' direction transited through the vicinity ; which became a major allied staging base feeding men and material forward from Brisbane, Australia which lies 1, 800 miles across the Coral Sea and about six hours away by B-17 bomber or C-47 transport.

By the mid-September MacArthur established a Forward Head Quarters in Port Moresby, and by its end his staff was setting a lunch table in both Headquarters, so often was he splitting his time between locales.

In September 1975, Papua New Guinea became an independent country with Port Moresby as its capital city.

Airlines PNG has its head office on the grounds of Jacksons International Airport in Port Moresby.

Flying with the 435th Bombardment Squadron in the defense of Port Moresby, it was lost with its 10-man crew on August 14, 1942.

Eventually Lae fell in September and soon afterwards, its elements were moved back to Port Moresby, before being sent to support the 7th Division's campaign in the Markham and Ramu Valleys and the advance on Madang.

The Papua New Guinea University of Technology is based 8 km outside of Lae and is the second largest university in PNG after its ' sister ' university the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

In 1942, the Commonwealth Banking Corporation ( CBC ) suspended its operations in Papua New Guinea as the Japanese Army captured many of the towns in which it operated, and bombed Port Moresby.

Since Port Moresby was the only port supporting operations in Papua, its defence was critical to the campaign.

The gunners got a lot of practice ; Port Moresby suffered its 78th raid on 17 August 1942.

From 15 – 29 September, the unit's Divisional Headquarters and its two Regimental Combat Teams, formed around the 126th and the 128th Infantry Regiments were moved to Port Moresby, New Guinea.

It is the second largest university in PNG after its ' sister ' university the University of Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

In the Port Moresby area, the bulk of its diet was found to consist of figs, notably Ficus albipila and Ficus benjamina, Canarium australianum drupes, and Archontophoenix, Calamus and Livistona palm fruit.

With its headquarters and main operating base set in Port Moresby, there are also support staff in Cairns and Brisbane, Australia.

In addition to its main office in Port Moresby, Bank of Hawaii ( PNG ) also had an office in Lae, PNG's second port city on the north-east coast.

Samarai town was established on the island and at its height was the second largest after Port Moresby in the Territory of Papua.

The Motuan people of the area now known as Port Moresby traded their pots for sago, other food and canoe logs, sailing from Hanuabada and other villages built on stilts above the waters of the bay.

Another two days saw Port Moresby almost grind to a halt.

The Japanese now resolved to mount an overland assault across the Owen Stanley Range to capture Port Moresby, which might have succeeded against virtually no resistance, had it been mounted in February.

There was already an important trade centre on the site of Port Moresby when the English Captain John Moresby of HMS Basilisk first visited it.

* The unusual dryness of Port Moresby compared to the rest of New Guinea is because the National Capital District lies parallel to the trade winds which have a drying effect.

By the 1920s the town had declined in importance and by the 1940s 70 percent of goods were now exported from Port Moresby, although Samarai was still significant in the trade of copra.
