Ashburton Grove was the site of Islington's Waste Transfer station.
The Alamein train line splits from one track to two just before Ashburton station, and as such the station only features a single bi-directional platform.
The first station on the Ashburton site opened on 30 May 1890, as part of the short-lived Outer Circle line.
The station only had this name for a few months, and on 12 December 1890, the station was renamed Ashburton, named for Ashburton Terrace in County Cork, Ireland.

The last stage of the works had to wait until 8 November 1962 when automatic signalling was introduced between Hartwell and Ashburton, and the signal bay at Hartwell station closed.

The Camberwell to Ashburton stretch of the Outer Circle re-opened in 1899, then in 1900, part of the northern section of the Outer Circle reopened as a shuttle service between East Camberwell and Deepdene station.

Lack of passengers led the service cuts, with the Riversdale to Fairfield Park section was closed from 12 April 1893, replaced by a horse bus service, the Oakleigh to Ashburton and Darling section closed on 9 December 1895, and the last section from Camberwell to Ashburton closed on 1 May 1897.
Passenger services to Ashburton were withdrawn on 3 November 1958 and the line closed entirely on 10 September 1962.
