Ashford was ranked # 1 in the world by Track & Field News over 100 metres in 1979 and 1981, and over 200 metres in 1981.

Ashford, unsurprisingly, regained her # 1 Track & Field News ranking.

Teaming up with songwriting husband / wife duo Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, Knight & The Pips released the album About Love in 1980, which featured " Landlord " and " Taste Of Bitter Love ".

Ashford & Simpson continued with Knight and the Pips for the 1981 follow-up, Touch, featuring " I Will Fight " and a cover of " I Will Survive ".

Rodgers was invited by The Four Tops to be part of their fiftieth anniversary TV / DVD concert celebration at Motown's Opera House and performed alongside Aretha Franklin, Dennis Edwards & The Temptations Revue, Sam Moore, Mary Wilson, Ashford and Simpson and The Four Tops.

The Nelson Mandela Concert was the largest such event since 1985's Live Aid and the line-up also featured: Dire Straits, George Michael, Eurythmics, Joe Cocker, Ashford & Simpson, Natalie Cole, Tracy Chapman, Wet Wet Wet, Bee Gees, UB40, Chrissie Hynde, Hugh Masekela, Jerry Dammers, Whitney Houston, Meat Loaf, Salt-N-Pepa, Stevie Wonder and many more.

Cover songs include Elmore James's " It Hurts Me Too ", The Beatles ' " I've Got a Feeling ", and Ashford & Simpson's " You're All I Need to Get By.

Another particularly noteworthy track on the album is the ballad " Design For Living ," which featured guests Laurie Anderson, Gina Shock of The Go-Go's, Valerie Simpson of Ashford & Simpson, Tina Weymouth of Tom Tom Club and Talking Heads, Nancy Wilson of Heart, and former bandmate Patti LaBelle.

" Abdul said that she reminded her of " a young Gladys Knight " after she performed the Garth Brooks song " Ain't Goin ' Down (' Til the Sun Comes Up )," Nickolas Ashford of famed soul duo Ashford & Simpson called her performance of " Ooo Baby Baby " by Smokey Robinson as " beautiful " and full of " sex appeal ," Famed film director Quentin Tarantino called her a " powerhouse " after her performance of " Somewhere " from the musical West Side Story, and Cowell announced her as " the best singer in the competition " after she sang " All the Time " by Barry Manilow and gave her " a ten out of ten " for her performance of " Don't Rain on My Parade ," which also garnered standing ovations from Abdul and Jackson.

His 1980 album, TP, included his signature song, " Love TKO " and the Ashford & Simpson composition, " Is It Still Good to You ".

Pendergrass tearfully thanked the audience for keeping him in their well-wishes and then performed the Ashford & Simpson classic, " Reach Out and Touch ( Somebody's Hand )".

The act enlisted former Motown producers Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson for their first two LPs -- About Love ( 1980 ) and Touch ( 1981 ).

For sessions of their first recording, the Ashford & Simpson composition, " Ain't No Mountain High Enough ", both Gaye and Terrell recorded separate versions.

Nickolas Ashford ( May 4, 1942 – August 22, 2011 ), and Valerie Simpson ( born August 26, 1946 ), were a husband and wife songwriting / production team and recording artists.

Ashford was born in Fairfield, South Carolina, and Simpson in the Bronx, New York.

Daisy Ashford lived at Southdown House, 44 St Anne ’ s Crescent from 1889 to 1896 where she wrote The Young Visiters.

Ashford and Simpson wrote many other hit songs including Chaka Khan's " I'm Every Woman " ( 1978 ) and Teddy Pendergrass's " Is It Still Good to You?

Upon joining the Motown staff in 1966, Ashford & Simpson were paired with the vocal duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, and they wrote and / or produced all but one of the late-1960s Gaye / Terrell singles, including hits such as the original version of " Ain't No Mountain High Enough ", " Your Precious Love ", " Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing ", and " You're All I Need to Get By ".

In 1938 he produced a diagram of the entire rail system of the London region ( as far as St Albans in the north, Ongar in the north east, Romford in the east, Bromley in the south east, Mitcham in the south, Hinchley Wood in the south west, Ashford in the west, and Tring in the north west ).

On his own, Ashford ( along with Frank Wilson ), produced the mammoth hit " I'm Gonna Make You Love Me ", which Diana Ross & the Supremes recorded in collaboration with the Temptations in 1968.

They released two further singles, " I Am Your Man ," ( US # 85, US R & B # 40 ) produced by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, and the Smokey Robinson-written and produced " Malinda " ( US # 48, US R & B # 16 ).

Ross ' version was produced by Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, and was built around the same thematic basis that made Ross ' 1970 remake of Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell's " Ain't No Mountain High Enough " a success.

The cover produced a version similar to gospel with elements of classical music strings, spoken word passages from Ross, with the Andantes, Jimmy Beavers, and Ashford and Simpson as backing singers giving the song a soul and gospel vocal element.

Written by Nickolas Ashford and Valerie Simpson and produced by Harvey Fuqua and Johnny Bristol, the doo-wop styled recording features background vocals by Fuqua, Gaye, Terrell and Bristol, and instrumentals by The Funk Brothers.

The first release off the duo's second album: You're All I Need, the song-written and produced by regular Gaye / Terrell collaborators Ashford & Simpson-became a hit within weeks of release eventually peaking at # 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and # 1 on the Hot Soul Singles chart, the first of the duo's s two # 1 hit R & B hits.

In 1979, Ross commissioned Chic founders Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards to create material for a new album after taking her daughters to see the band in concert, following the success of Ross's final Ashford & Simpson-composed and produced LP, The Boss.
