Roe Canada Ltd. was restructured in 1954 as a holding company with two aviation subsidiaries: Avro Aircraft Ltd. and Orenda Engines Ltd., which began operating under these names on 1 January 1955.

The first purpose built jet airliners were the de Havilland Comet ( UK ) and the Avro Jetliner ( Canada ).

Commonly known as Avro Canada, this company started in 1945 as an aircraft plant and became within thirteen years the third-largest company in Canada, one of the largest 100 companies in the world, and directly employing over 50, 000.

Howe in 1944 to express the " utmost importance to Canada " of the establishment of a Canadian aircraft industry, and UK-based Avro also established in 1944 a company searching for post-war opportunities.

Avro Canada began operations in the former Victory plant.

The bombers, whose names all started with the letter " V " and which were known collectively as the V-class, were the Vickers Valiant ( first flew 1951, entered service 1955 ), Avro Vulcan ( first flew 1952, in service 1956 ) and Handley Page Victor ( first flew 1952, in service 1958 ).

Of the total, nearly half were built at Avro's Woodford and Chadderton ( Manchester ) sites, with some 700 Lancasters built at the Avro " shadow " factory next to Leeds Bradford Airport ( formerly Yeadon Aerodrome ), northwest Leeds.

Despite Avro Canada's success in producing the CF-100, Canada's first jet fighter for the Royal Canadian Air Force ( RCAF ), aircraft development had proven to be a time-consuming and expensive process.

The Merlin powered many World War II aircraft: the British Hawker Hurricane, Supermarine Spitfire, De Havilland Mosquito ( twin-engined ), Avro Lancaster ( 4-engine ); it also transformed the American P-51 Mustang into one of the best fighters of its time, its Merlin engine built by Packard under licence.

The Dart engine was used in the Argosy, Avro 748 ( and its military variant the Andover ), Friendship, Herald and Viscount aircraft, whilst the more powerful Tyne powered the Atlantic, Transall and the Vanguard.
